Today, I had the privilege of visiting one of our brave firefighter warriors at the Oncology Ward at St Vincent's Hospital Brisbane while she undergoes chemotherapy treatment. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of the silent battles many firefighters continue to face long after the fires stop burning.

As firefighters, we are trained to look after others first. We run toward danger, protect our communities, and stand shoulder to shoulder with our crews in the toughest conditions imaginable. But too often, we neglect our own health and wellbeing in the process.

This morning reinforced something incredibly important — we must never underestimate the value of checking in on the people we care about. A phone call, a visit, a message, or simply being present can mean more than words can express to someone facing the fight of their life.

It also serves as a critical reminder to every firefighter: regular health monitoring and early medical screening are essential. The occupational risks associated with our profession are real, and early detection can make all the difference. Looking after your health is not weakness — it is responsibility, not only to yourself, but to your family, your crew, and those who care about you.

The Firefighter Cancer Foundation Australia continues to stand beside our firefighters and their families through these battles. To all our warriors currently fighting, know this: you are not alone, and your firefighting family stands with you every step of the way.

We share all our love with you Jasmin, you are a truly remarkable woman and stoic Firefighter and above all a Tarus to boot. Till our next appointment, fight like hell and dont forget to reach out.

Good opportunity locally.

It’s getting dry! We have a crew at a fire in Sarabah ( valley to the west of us) These wonderful volunteers are helping with a great crew of other brigades. This is what we do. Help where we can in other areas and we know others will help us here if needed. We ask our community to make sure they have permits and check in with the Fire Warden before lighting up.

12/04/2026

With the ground drying out, landholders are wanting to burn off.

All fires over 2m in any direction require a permit.

Permits are free.

In rural Queensland the use of fire is controlled through the volunteer Fire Warden network.

Remember, if you live in an urban or rural fringe community, the Fire Warden could be your local fire station.

The Fire Warden’s role includes:
-granting or rejecting applications for permit to light fire
-determining the conditions under which permitted fires can be lit
-advising owners and occupiers of the need for fuel and hazard reduction
-recommending safety precautions for the protection of homes and assets.

Taking advantage of favourable weather conditions, some large permitted pile burns are being conducted on a Beechmont Road property near the Happitat property. These piles are to the west, above Back Creek. They are monitored by the property owner and should burn well, creating visible smoke for a few hours. Conditions are good for these types of permitted burns. Photo for attention, not today’s actual burn. 😉

On Sunday, 5 of our volunteers helped a community member with a large pile burn. These burns provide opportunities to utilise and practise our skills and build our team work. This was a good hot, clean burn with the land owner doing the prep work to ensure his environment was safe. A good job all round!
