COMMUNITY UPDATE - Lamington National Park Road - Natural Disaster Program Update
The Queensland Government is progressing essential restoration works on Lamington National Park Road as part of the Natural Disaster Program. These works are being delivered to repair damage caused by recent severe weather events.
Lamington National Park Road is a key access point for residents, visitors, tourism operators, and park services. Restoring the road as quickly and safely as possible is a priority.
(a) Whats happening
From late April 2026, road restoration works will commence on multiple sites on Lamington National Park Road between Canungra and O’Reillys, to repair damage from the severe storms and heavy rainfall in late 2023/early 2024.
Restoration works will include:
• Repairing sections of pavement damaged by heavy rainfall and landslips
• Reinstating road shoulders and drainage
• Stabilising embankments and surrounding slopes
• Line marking and road furniture installation.
Works will be underway Monday to Friday, between 6.30am to 5.30pm. Single lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place when works are underway.
(b) What to expect
Works on a major site 4.2km uphill from Sarabah Road are scheduled to take place from late April 2026 until September 2026, weather and site conditions permitting.
For the safety of work crews and road users, this major site on Lamington National Park Road will be reduced to one lane 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Please follow the signs and take care while travelling through work zones.
TMR and our contractors will work to minimise impacts on residents, local businesses, and visitors where possible.
(c) Other upcoming restoration works
Scenic Rim and Ipswich Storms and Rainfall (November 2024)
• Restoration works at one site 1.2km uphill from Kamarun Lookout Road. Works will include batter stabilisation on a major downslope slip.
• In addition, over 10 locations have been identified for restoration between Canungra and O’Reilly’s.
• Restoration works are expected to commence on these sites in mid-2026.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred (March 2025)
• Since emergency repairs early last year, significant work has been done, including survey and geotechnical investigations, planning, and designs now underway.
• This work will ensure we develop the best value-for-money restoration solutions for over 10 identified damage sites to be restored between Canungra and O'Reilly's.
• Restoration works are expected to commence in late 2026.

(d) Access for residents and visitors
Lamington National Park Road will remain open, but access will be managed around work zones. Please allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic controllers and on site signage.
Access to properties, tourism operators, and national park facilities will be maintained throughout the works.
(e) Why this work is important
Severe weather events place significant strain on mountain and rural road networks. Restoring Lamington National Park Road ensures:
• safer travel for residents and visitors
• reliable access for park and emergency services
• protection of local tourism and economic activity
The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
