Koori Country Cultural Fire Aboriginal Corporation Our primary objective is to care for Country through the practice of Aboriginal Cultural Burning. Fire has story (lore).

Koori Country Cultural Fire (KCCF) Aboriginal Corporation is a not for profit culturally led Community Group established in 2017. Our aim is to help revive the traditional use of fire to care for Country as the Aboriginal people of South East Australia did for thousands of years prior to the colonisation in 1788. Aboriginal people were then forcibly displaced from their traditional lands and with

it, their cultural practices living on Country, following lore, conducting ceremony, speaking language etc were severely disrupted and stopped. The use of Cultural Fire by Aboriginal people therefore also ceased. It provides warmth and light, cooks food, provides heat for tool making, is part of Ceremony and just like every other natural element within the environment, fire has given life and allowed Aboriginal people to survive in and to care for their Country.

Some of the footage captured in this documentary includes a Cultural Burn conducted at 'Ngurrampaa' where Koori Country Cultural Fire Aboriginal Corporation was ‘born’. We acknowledge all of our Practitioners and workshop attendees who have had a part to play in bringing the ‘good fire’ back to ‘Ngurrampaa’ over the past 10 years. 🔥🧡🔥

It was 5 years ago today on 5 December, 2019 that the Gospers Mountain wildfire merged with the ‘Little L Complex’ wildfire and moved due East out of Yengo National Park.

‘Ngurrampaa’ was in its path and you can still read a Sydney Morning Herald article about what happened in the link

Since then, Yarrabin Fire and Koori Country Cultural Fire Aboriginal Corporation along with Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences have been continuing to monitor and treat parts of ‘Ngurrampaa’ with Cultural Fire. The results are amazing.

We also Acknowledge and offer ourvrespect to Uncle Paul Gordon who supported the initial Cultural Burns and workshops at ‘Ngurrampaa’ from 2015. He has taught members of Koori Country Cultural Fire and others so much.

We are planning for more Cultural Burns, Workshops and Cultural Fire Camps from March 2025. Register your interest now in attending: [email protected]

So let’s get on with supporting and resourcing Aboriginal communities and practitioners to get on with reviving Cultural Burning.

As wildfires become more frequent and intense due to the climate crisis, combining the First Nations practice with western techniques is ‘crucial’

About Us

‘Koori Country Firesticks Aboriginal Corporation (KCFSAC) is a non for profit organisation that aim to revive Traditional Aboriginal cultural practices of burning Country as an alternative approach to Hazard Reduction techniques used by private and public landholders and managers. KCFSAC primary objective is to care for Country (Our Mother Earth), regardless of tenure or ownership. This knowledge has been passed onto KCFSAC by Aboriginal Cultural Elders and knowledge holders. Whilst the Australian landscape is broad and extremely diverse, it is the underlying principles and methodologies of Aboriginal cultural burning that remain the same. KCFSAC now pass on this knowledge to other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to help restore Country that has been impacted by wild fire, the absence of fire and or infestation of exotic weeds. Cultural burning also acts to reduce dangerous fuel loads that surround urban development and regional towns and properties’.
