A great Investment

Meet Brandon and Eric.

Brandon is a PhD student at the University of Maryland, studying AI. Eric is doing his PhD in quantum physics. Both are great products of the Australian education system.

But here’s the fun fact. These two guys brought their laptops to a public lecture I was delivering at the UMD School of Public Policy. They did so because these were the very same laptops that they were given by the government as part of the ‘Laptops in Schools’ program I launched back in 2008.

They both told me it was these laptops that kickstarted their interest in computers, computer science and now AI and quantum physics.

Not a bad investment over the years.

Do you burn piles of dead or dry vegetation to maintain your property? The new Open Pile Burn Policy is designed to make this process safer for you, your neighbours and our environment.

We’ve updated the Open Pile Burning Policy based on feedback from you and the Rural Fire Service.

Updates include:
• Only burn dead, dry vegetation – no green, damp or compacted material
• Burn one pile at a time, max size 2m wide x 1.5m high
• Burn piles must occur during 7am - 10pm and extinguished between 10pm - 7am
• Keep piles 150mm branches or smaller to reduce smoke
• Fire must be 20m from buildings and clear of flammable material within 4.5m
• Have a hose and water supply ready to control the fire
• Give 24 hours’ notice to neighbours and the RFS (or Fire & Rescue NSW if not in a Rural Fire District).
• A responsible adult must supervise the fire at all times

Your feedback is vital to ensure our Open Pile Burn Policy meets your needs and keeps our region safe. We encourage everyone to review the policy and complete the survey by Friday 7 November.

One of our branch members Emma McBride MP has a very special (50th) Happy Birthday today. She is a 6th generation Coastie and has served the seat of Dobell as our Federal Member of Parliament since 2016. She always has the Coast's best interest at heart and is passionate in getting better outcomes in Health, Education and Housing for this area. Emma worked at Wyong Hospital as a Pharmacist specialising in Mental health before entering federal politics. Her interest in Mental health through her studies and previous work led her to become an assistant Minister in Health, Su***de Prevention and Rural Regional health in 2022. She is always supportive of all sports on the Coast but does have a special passion for Netball and Swimming especially at the Grant McBride Ocean Baths named in honour of her father. In her down time from Parliamentary duties, she is on Patrol with Toowoon Bay Surf Club, helping out with Landcare and spending time with her beautiful family. From your Tumbi Labor branch family, we wish you all the joy and happiness on your Birthday.
