Solidarity with Tasmanian Teachers
On the morning of 30 October 2025, the lawns of Hobart’s Parliament House filled with members of the Australian Education Union (AEU) rallying against excessive workloads and increasingly hostile working conditions faced by educators.
They were joined in solidarity by substantial numbers from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and the Tasmanian branch of the Health Services Union (HSU), alongside a contingent from the United Workers Union. Smaller groups from the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) also came out in support.
Speakers rallied against the growing strain on teachers caused by staff shortages, escalating violence from students, and a lack of support for high-needs students. Unions rejected the government’s latest offer of a 3 per cent pay rise, arguing it failed to address sector-specific issues. Members spoke about the issues in their industry, with AEU member Jake highlighting the poor working conditions causing teachers to burn out within five years, and how training would not fix the issues faced by teachers everyday.
Measly wage increases alone are unable to address the cost-of-living crisis facing essential workers like teachers. Teachers, nurses and other essential workers need subsidised public housing to allow them to serve their communities with the stability of a home.
