Today our brigade attended a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of a life. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed how quickly photos, videos and commentary began circulating on social media. While some may feel they are helping spread awareness, we want to gently remind our community that these situations involve REAL people, REAL families, and REAL trauma, far beyond what can be seen through a screen.

Scenes like this are not content. They are confronting, distressing, and deeply personal for those involved, including emergency personnel who are tasked with attending, managing, and carrying the weight of these incidents long after they leave the scene.

We are incredibly disappointed to see footage and speculation being shared so freely. Not everything needs to be posted, and not everything should be. Families should never be at risk of learning about a loved one through a Facebook post or community page.

We acknowledge that people often post with good intentions, wanting to inform others or check on loved ones. However, this is exactly why tools like the VicEmergency app exist, to provide timely, accurate updates without compromising dignity, privacy, or respect.

Moments like these should bring out the best in a community, not fuel rumours or turn tragedy into something to be shared and discussed online.

We understand the world we live in, but as a community, we can and should do better. Show respect. Think before posting. And please, allow those affected the privacy and compassion they deserve.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our valued member, Peter Hendricksen, who passed away last week.

Peter began his CFA journey in 1991 with Werribee Fire Brigade - CFA, where he dedicated many years as an active and highly involved member. When he transferred to Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade in 2015, he brought with him valuable experience, knowledge and a strong commitment to serving his community. Throughout his years of service, Peter made a significant contribution not only to brigade life but also to supporting community safety in the areas he served.

Peter brought a wealth of knowledge, experience and perspective to our brigade. He was always part of the conversation, often suggesting different ways of doing things and offering ideas that drew on his urban brigade experience. His input was always valued, and his willingness to share his knowledge helped shape and strengthen our brigade.

On 19 March, Peter was formally presented with his National Medal and recognised for 35 years of CFA service at Echuca Regional Health. Although Peter had become unwell and was unable to attend our awards evening the following day, it meant a great deal that he could still receive the recognition he had been so looking forward to. The presentation was made by North West DCO Trevor Weston, District 20 ACFO Mick Sporton, Commander Paul Elso, Captain George Calleja, alongside Peter’s son Commander Dean Hendricksen.

At our awards night on 20 March, Peter’s family attended in his honour, which was a very thoughtful and touching gesture, and one we sincerely appreciated.

Peter’s dedication to the CFA and to the communities he served was evident throughout his many years of service. He will be remembered not only for his contribution and commitment, but also for the conversations, ideas and presence he brought to our brigade.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts are with Dean and the entire Hendricksen family at this difficult time ❤️

Today, our hearts pause to remember firefighter Nathan Taylor, taken from us far too soon 🤍🕊️

Not a day goes by where Nath isn’t felt within our brigade walls, our crews, and the fires we continue to face. Though he is no longer beside us, his spirit walks with us in every call-out and every moment we lean on one another.

Nath’s legacy lives on powerfully. He was the first to complete the stair climb for Bamawm Extension, and this year he inspired Nathan, Rick and Logan to take on the climb in his honour each step taken with Nath in their hearts, carrying his strength, determination and courage with them.

With the devastation we are currently facing, we know without a doubt that Nath would be right here with us, boots on, sleeves rolled up, doing everything he could to protect the community and supporting his mates and fellow brigade members. Even though he can’t be here physically, we feel him watching over us as our guardian angel, guiding and protecting us with the same fierce dedication he showed in life.

Nath has left an unfillable space in both the Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade and the Echuca CFA. He is so deeply missed not only as a firefighter, but as a cherished friend, a beloved son, and a treasured brother. Our thoughts and love remain forever with Kerrie, Craig, Lyndall and Luke ❤️

We miss you beyond words mate, 12 months has come so quick. We hope you’re looking down, watching over us, and feeling just how proud we are to carry your name, your legacy, and your heart with us always. ❤️🚒
