🇦🇺 EXERCISE AUSTRAL SHIELD 🇵🇱

Earlier this year, soldiers from 8/7 RVR deployed to Western Australia as part of 4th Brigade - Australian Army for Exercise AUSTRAL SHIELD.

ℹ️ Our soldiers joined more than 1,500 ADF personnel and representatives from state and federal agencies to test Australia’s ability to respond to domestic security challenges.

The exercise provided an opportunity to train alongside Defence, government and civil authorities, strengthening interoperability, coordination and readiness in support of the Australian community.

For 8/7 RVR, it was another opportunity to work alongside soldiers from across the ADF, and test our ability to operate as part of a larger formation in a challenging environment.

Congratulations to 8/7 RVR's newest Sergeants.

Last week saw CPLs Petering, Brown and Coltman promoted to Sergeant, in a presentation attended by CO 8/7 RVR, and MAJGEN Laidlaw, Colonel Commandant of the Royal Victoria Regiment.

SGT Petering, SGT Brown and SGT Coltman have each made significant contributions to A COY, OPS and C COY respectively. To them, their families and the teams around them: thank you for continued service.

8/7 RVR Hosts Brigade-Wide Clerk PME

Earlier this month, 8/7 RVR hosted a Clerk Professional Military Education weekend at Paschendale Barracks, Bendigo.

32 clerks attended from units across Victoria and Tasmania, including HQ 4 BDE, 8/7 RVR, 22ER, 4CSSB, 5/6 RVR, 4/19 PWLH, 12/40 RTR MUR, 3HB, and 138 SQN.

The weekend gave clerks the chance to build on their ECN 150 trade skills alongside peers from across the brigade.

Well done to all who attended, and thanks to the instructors and staff who put the weekend together.

C COY Supporting the Ballarat Jobs & Training Expo 2026 🇦🇺

Recently, C COY supported ADF Careers at the Ballarat Jobs & Training Expo 2026, connecting with students, job seekers and members of the local community.

ℹ️ The Expo showcased a wide range of employment, training and career pathways, giving attendees the chance to engage with employers, industry representatives and training organisations. With an estimated 1,800 visitors to the expo, it was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the diverse career opportunities available in the Australian Army. 💪

🇦🇺 F9 QUALIFIED 🇦🇺

Recently, more soldiers from 8/7 RVR qualified on the F9 pistol, continuing the transition from the Browning Mk3.

The F9, based on the SIG Sauer P320 X-Carry Pro, comes standard with a red-dot sight, weapon light and holster, and is supported by non-lethal training kit and WTSS.

PT looked a little different recently, as 7 Platoon swapped boots and packs for yoga mats and pilates.

Pilates is a great way to build core strength, improve mobility and flexibility, reduce the risk of injury, and aid recovery - all important components of maintaining operational readiness. 💪

On behalf of the members of 8/7 RVR, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Major Hugh McFadden.

The loss of a leader, mate, and family man is felt across the entire Army community. While many will remember Hugh for his rank and service, it is often the qualities behind the uniform that leave the greatest mark. His smile, laughter, energy, and commitment to those around him made a lasting impression on everyone privileged to serve alongside him.

Hugh’s passing is a reminder of the strength shown not only by him, but also by his family and loved ones who stood beside him throughout that journey. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Please know that you do not stand alone in your grief. The officers and soldiers of 8/7 RVR share in your loss and stand with you as you honour Hugh’s life, service, and legacy.

Lest we forget.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Major Hugh McFadden, our Battalion Second In Command.

Major McFadden lost his battle with cancer this morning and passed away peacefully, whilst surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Hugh’s smile, laughter and energy will be sorely missed.

A service to commemorate Hugh’s life will be announced shortly, with details shared through the appropriate channels.

The Battalion extends our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and friends.

Recently, soldiers from C Company, 7 Platoon, used a PMV movement task as an opportunity to sharpen the skills of drivers and crew commanders.

As an added bonus, getting these vehicles out on Victorian roads gave members of the community a chance to see Army Reserve soldiers in action and the work being done by local Reserve units.
