The “Chinese Australians and the Two World Wars” Photo and Documentary Exhibition officially opened at 2:00 pm this afternoon at the New Gold Mountain Chinese Library.

More than 50 attendees—including local residents as well as visitors from Melbourne and surrounding areas—took part in the opening ceremony.
One particularly moving moment occurred when an elderly visitor unexpectedly discovered a photograph of her father, followed by another of her uncle. Both were heroes of World War II. Deeply emotional, she took a photo with her father’s portrait and gave an impromptu speech, sharing how her ancestors came from China to Australia during the gold rush, later settled here, and contributed to the building and defense of Australia—some even sacrificing their lives.

There are many more stories like these that deserve to be remembered and honored. It is our responsibility to uncover and document them, so that people today are aware of them and that they can be passed on to future generations.
The exhibition will run from today until May 9.

A letter from founder, Mr. Sun:

This afternoon was a team-building gathering for volunteers of the Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library.
It coincided with the traditional Chinese solar term of Winter Solstice, a time for honoring and burying deceased loved ones, and also with the moment when people across Australia were mourning the victims of the tragic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney a week earlier.
At 6:47 p.m., we lit candles and observed a minute of silence.

I could not help but recall our previous volunteer team-building activity, which was a visit to the Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne. On that occasion, we agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between our two communities in the future, and to contribute more positively to the development of Australia’s multicultural society.

This year's Australia-China Economic Trade & Investment Expo coincides with the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. As one of the participating organizations, the Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library has carefully selected a collection of relevant books, albums, and archival materials for public exhibition.

Today's setup has already attracted significant attention and may become one of the highlights of this year's expo.

【Newsletter】
The Xin JinShan Chinese Library held its 2024–2025 annual meeting, where attendees gathered in a joyful and harmonious atmosphere.

Over the past year, the library has welcomed thousands of visitors, becoming a well-known “check-in spot” across Australia and a hub for promoting Chinese culture.

The library has hosted multiple new book launches and reader forums, drawing enthusiastic participation from the public.

As one of the exhibitors at this May’s Ballarat Heritage Festival, the library received widespread praise from organizers and attendees for its AI-powered exhibition on the history of Chinese in the Gold Rush era.

Of particular importance, the library has established itself as a research center for the discovery, documentation, and publication of historical materials related to Chinese Australians. Assisting Chinese descendants in tracing their roots and honoring their ancestors has become a key service of the library.

The current board was highly praised for its dedication and contributions to the development of the library, and a unanimous resolution was passed for their reappointment. Deep gratitude was also extended to the library’s team of volunteers for their selfless service.
