Meet Gabriela, one of the 2026 ABC Takeover Ballarat winners! Gabby is a young person in the Ballarat community who proudly represents her mob.

Gabby shares that she “wasn’t like other kids” who grew up around their mob, she did not have answers to the questions people asked her.

But in year 7, Gabriela began connecting with her culture through programs Little Lubblys and Nallei Jering where she found where she fit, surrounded by other young people like herself.

“Every day I feel more connected and more proud” – Gabriela

Meet Mason, one of the 2026 ABC Takeover Ballarat winners! Mason is community minded, but he hasn’t always been, he put in the work to get here.

After the loss of his father, Mason struggled to comprehend the emotions he was experiencing, which led to him lashing out. Mason has come a long way since then.

With support from his stepfather, Mason found ways to positively engage with community and enjoy it including cadets and volunteering. Mason now regularly spends his time volunteering with Pinarc Disability Support. Mason shares: “My first thought when I wake up is ‘How can I add value and help make someone’s day?’”

Meet Kai, one of the 2026 ABC Takeover Ballarat winners! Kai is a positive leader and a masterful drum teacher.

Kai was told “girls can’t play drums, that’s a boy thing” by the boys in her class, this annoyed her so much that she demanded her parents enrol her into drumming lessons. At eight years old, she would drop the sticks during practices and pick them right back up again. Kai has continuously learnt about drumming over the years through lessons, being part of bands (yes that’s right, BANDS plural) and through completing her certificate two in drumming. At 15, Kai opened up her very own drumming school and was overwhelmed by the amount of people who wanted to learn from her. All but one of Kai’s current students are girls, very much proving that drums are a girl thing.

Learn more about Kai and her story at Kai says she's been overwhelmed by the interest in her drumming school. - ABC Takeover

Sophie is a motivated young rower who shares in her love of the sport for the 2026 takeover, that it has been 34 years since the girls in her age group rowing for Ballarat High have won Head of the lake, but Sophie wants to win and have her teams photo up beside the 1991 winners.

“Rowing is about moving forward, no matter what you’re up against.” – Sophie
