Did you pay your Victorian vehicle registration between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026? You may be eligible for a 20% rebate from the Victorian Government.

Today, Buchan stood back with a smile.

The upgraded Buchan Recreation Reserve officially opened this afternoon and the new pavilion was filled with exactly the kind of people who made it happen: community members, volunteers, club supporters, and families who refused to let this project fall away.

This one has been years in the making.
It started not in a council office, but in community meetings with locals who knew what their town needed and kept pushing until it became a reality — through funding hurdles and all the rest.

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth put it well today:
"This project belongs to you — the community."
And it really does.

The volunteers who coach the juniors, prepare the grounds, organise events and quietly keep things running and who are the first to arrive and last to leave — and today, they ran the barbecue too 👏

The new facilities will serve Buchan's football, netball, cricket, tennis and pony club for generations to come. But more than that, this space is built to hold the community through whatever comes next — just as the old clubrooms did in the devastating aftermath of the 2019–20 fires.

Congratulations, Buchan, here’s to every game, every win, every tough loss, every birthday, barbecue and quiet moment of your community being together.

The best stories this pavilion will ever hold, are yet to be written 🧡

𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘂𝗽𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭𝟱 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 🚶🌿

Upgrades to the Dinni Birraark Walk at Newlands Arm will begin on Monday 15 June, with works expected to take around six weeks, weather permitting. 👷‍♀️

The project will improve safety, accessibility and long-term sustainability along a 372-metre section of the trail between Backwater Court and Kellina Court. Works will also include rock beaching to help protect the foreshore from erosion. 🌊

During construction, temporary access restrictions will apply within active work areas. ⚠️

Council is also asking that all boats, kayaks and other watercraft stored along the foreshore near Backwater Court be removed by Monday 25 May 2026 ahead of works commencing. 🚣

Mayor said the upgrades were an important investment in a much-loved local walking trail and surrounding environment. 🌱

For people in parts of North East, East Gippsland and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

When:
Damaging wind gusts are possible about the northeastern ranges this afternoon.

Situation:
An increase in damaging winds has been observed again in the northeast ranges in the northwesterlies ahead of a front. Damaging winds with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible. Winds are expected to ease below thresholds again this evening.

109 km/h gust recorded at Mount Hotham at 12:15 pm and 12:59 pm AEST.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Saturday

Situation:
Increased northerly winds ahead of a cold front moving through The Great Australian Bight extend over elevated parts in the west and expected to extend over the eastern ranges this morning.

Damaging wind gusts of around 100 km/h are occurring about areas above 1000 metres in western parts of the state and expected to extend over the eastern ranges this morning.

Winds are expected to ease from the west on late this morning.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.

Thank you to everyone who came down to chat with us at the Port of Bairnsdale today and what a glorious day for it 🌞

One of our favourite chats was with Kaden, who'd stopped in at the Port on his second date with Keely and was a real sport and gave us his feedback.

Turns out he's also an avid paddle boarder who makes the journey from Lindenow to the Port and had some ideas including better access between the river and the bank, plus a bit more lighting along the paths (handy for a romantic evening stroll perhaps 😉).

𝐁𝐈𝐆 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐙𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐌𝐍𝐃 🥶

The Big Freeze has been making waves across East Gippsland and the country.

At Bairnsdale City Oval, a $200,000 target was smashed, including $2,700 from our very own Richard "Dick" Bakos sliding for Lindenow South FNC.

Marlo Hotel hosted its first ever Big Freeze on the lawn, raising over $12,000, with Orbost Service Centre's Annette Farley taking the plunge.

And it's not over – this Saturday, June 13, Council's Place Facilitator, Emma Halafihi takes on the slide at the 2026 (Swifts) Creek Freeze SLIDE at Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve.

Our staff aren't just showing up for their roles – they're showing up for their community. Whether it's behind the customer service desk, out on the aerodrome, or supporting our townships, our team members are part of the fabric of East Gippsland, and it shows.

It's also a great reminder of why our community facilities matter - our ovals, and reserves become the heart of something bigger, bringing people together for common good.
