Incident Update - Deep Creek Fire

Exactly one week since it began, the Deep Creek fire has formally been declared as contained.

Firefighters from across Australia continue to work on hotspots and mopping up in steep, heavily vegetated and inaccessible country.

Aircraft operations have supported firefighters on the ground by performing approximately 1,000 drops over the fire; gathering intelligence from the fireground, including the impacts from the fire; and targeted aerial ignition to assist backburning operations. Aerial intelligence has assisted CFS in gathering a more accurate picture of the total area burned in the Deep Creek Fire, which now totals approximately 4,400 hectares and a perimeter of 56 kilometres.

Aerial firefighting drops may consist of water or firefighting chemicals. The concentrations of chemicals used in aviation drops are not harmful to animals or humans and are biodegradable and do not pose health risks but may change the taste and potability of drinking water. If your house is doused and your gutters run off to a rainwater tank, you should drain and flush the gutters and tank, then refill with fresh water. Further information is available at cfs.sa.gov.au/about/publications/fact-sheets/.

SA Police rapid assessment teams have conducted assessments of damage to assets within the fireground. It has been confirmed that 22 structures have been damaged or destroyed and 12 vehicles have been destroyed.

Bushfire investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of this fire, however, the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Considerable work has been done to successfully protect a known area of habitat for the nationally endangered Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-Wren and the Beautiful Firetail. Several species of native orchid are also known to grow in the fire area, including the critically endangered Fleurieu Leek-orchid. In specific areas, heavy machinery was excluded from operational planning to benefit preservation of these species.

Hazardous tree assessments are being finalised, which has enabled the opening of several roads in the area. Please refer to traffic.sa.gov.au for the most current information. If you must travel in the area, please drive to conditions and follow directions from emergency services.

The Deep Creek fire is affecting local individuals, families and the wider community in many ways. If you have been impacted and would like support, you can register for a wellbeing call back from the Australian Red Cross by completing the wellbeing support registration form. This can be found on the dedicated webpage that has been created on the CFS website at cfs.sa.gov.au/deep-creek-fire, alongside ongoing updates and a link to The District Council of Yankalilla Community Resources and Support Services page.

Incident Update - Deep Creek Fire

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is actively firefighting and undertaking asset protection between Deep Creek National Park and Cape Jervis in the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.

A spot fire has caused the fire to rapidly spread towards Main South Road and Fishery Beach Road. The fire remains uncontrolled and is burning on multiple fronts which are all moving quickly across the area.

There is a warning message issued for this fire. Please stay informed through the CFS website (cfs.sa.gov.au) or Alert SA app.

CFS, with support from Department for Environment and Water, Forestry SA and SA Metropolitan Fire Service, currently have more than 250 firefighters working both to contain the fire and on asset protection for the multiple structures currently under threat. Additional firefighting personnel are coming from across the state to support efforts.

Anyone in the impacted areas are encouraged to enact their bushfire plans and stay informed as this situation is quickly changing.

Main South Road is now closed between Cole Road, Delamere to Cape Jervis.

This fire is putting a lot of smoke up which is extending across Kangaroo Island and the Yorke Peninsula area. As a precaution residents who suffer from respiratory or cardic conditions may wish to consider closing all doors and windows and remaining indoors.

Smoke from this fire may be impacting surrounding areas and emergency services will continue working on and around roads. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

The western part of Deep Creek National Park remains closed and Talisker Conservation Park is fully closed. Visitors should remain alert and stay informed.

A CFS staging area is operating at the Yankalilla Showgrounds, and Yankalilla Oval is being used for aviation operations. The public is asked to stay clear of these areas.

People are also reminded that drones pose a serious hazard to firefighting aircraft and must be kept well away from firegrounds.

Take note please.

Hi all.
Everyone is aware of what is going on down south. We are doing our best to share and keep updated everyone with the latest information.

You will no doubt see our Staging Area has been set up at the Yankalilla Showgrounds. The size of this staging area will rapidly increase this afternoon as will the number of fire trucks in the area as crews change over.

PLEASE AVOID THE AREA.

We will say sorry now for the short term increase in noise and traffic and hope our local residents understand the circumstance.

So please. Unless you have direct involvement, please avoid the Showgrounds area. If you have some yummy snacks for our volunteers, you can drop them off but the Salvos are doing an amazing job providing nutritious meals to our teams.

Thanks again and sorry for the noise.

Please follow all advice and stay safe ❤️
