This is the response to the Cairns Regional Council Aquatic Strategy by Carly Francis our local Kindy Teacher here at Babinda Kindy.
Please check out the Babinda Taskforce page for the links to their own local survey and the Cairns Regional Council survey.
Babinda Pool is a much loved community asset that is extremely important for the patrons that utilise the pool. I was the last long-term swimming teacher, taught for 8 years and finished in April 2022 when I then took on the Kindy teacher role next door. The swim school had over 100 students and was sought after by Babinda and regional families, and a number of Innisfail families. They would travel to attend swimming lessons at Babinda. The pool has the opportunity to thrive again, and if Management is able to advertise for, recruit and train staff, then the possibilities are high for it to be well utilised again.
I also believe that the facilities have not been maintained in the past 12 years since commencing work there. There have been ongoing maintenance issues that were never addressed in a timely manner or at all, including multiple requests to fix tiles inside the pool, fix leaks, and make repairs. It is now evident that fixes that could have prolonged the life of the facility are not possible now. I believe this is neglect on the council part, as well as the council officers that manage the facilities infrastructure.
I love the boulders, but even I struggle to enter and exit the water (49 years of age with osteoarthritis) and cannot use it for exercising. Only for recreation to cool off on a hot day. I value my time being able to access the Babinda pool for the purpose of rehabilitation, exercise and recreation with my family. My daughter has the chance at thriving by swimming and it is incredibly important for her with her ongoing mobility and emotional needs. The non weight bearing exercise and freedom that the water brings for someone with restricted muscle movement is extremely important. We do access Innisfail swimming pool currently for swimming lessons once per week, and also attend Babinda Pool weekly for further training and recreation. Ideally I would love to access on a weekend, as it's local and a key opportunity for me around my working hours (work full time in Edmonton and Babinda) and accessing the pool during the week can sometimes mean I am needing to make up additional hours of my work on the weekends.
I feel that removing the pool altogether will severely inhibit many community members to exercise as this facility is such a vital resource. The wellbeing of our community is extremely important, and just like the pool, we too are aging.
The Local Kindy (our kindy - Babinda Community Kindergarten) currently has the highest numbers ever attending kindy. We have 26 children attending kindy, from the very start of school this year. This shows that we have increasing numbers of families with young children moving to the region. The services attract more families to our area, and I want to see our community thrive, not die. These children could be our future leaders, future heroes, future olympians, future academics, future scientists, future farmers, the possibilities are endless. But in order to achieve this status, our children need to have the chance to be kids and enjoy life. Learning to swim in a safe and supportive environment is highly important to our children, families, schools, and community.
I urge the Cairns Regional Council to dig deep, put the community first, and lead with your heart. There is not a question of do we have the funds to keep the pool open in Babinda, but we need to FIND the funds to keep the pool open in Babinda!
Please have your say in both links below. One is for Babinda Taskforce and the other is directly to Cairns Regional Council. Please ensure everyone completes the Cairns regional council survey.
It is 2 questions plus one comment.
Just comment - Don't close Babinda pool. It is vital for the local community to maintain health and wellbeing in all ages.
