I found this photo in our historical collection. Bank of North Queensland, 1908. And it stirred my interest. Where was it? How is it related to the Burdekin?
Looking further, I found the second picture, also Bank of North Queensland, dated 1911. It was obviously a different building. Perhaps they moved premises?
Then I found the photo Queen Street, 1919. There was the bank! But the name had changed. A bit of research told me that the Bank of North Queensland merged with the Royal Bank of Queensland in 1917 to become the Bank of Queensland, which was then acquired in 1922 by the National Bank of Australasia. Look at the saloon beside it – can you recognise that facade?
There was a postcard in the photo albums, titled National Bank under construction, pre-1936. This tells a story. I see the earlier bank being de-constructed, to allow the new rendered brick bank with its impressive Doric columns to be fitted within the gap.
Finally, another photo called Queen Street, Ayr 1936. Eerie how familiar it still is, 90 years on …
