Merry Christmas to all our many friends and family. Wishing you a merry festive season and a happy and prosperous New Year. This morning we were heralded by the birth of a little bull calf, called good King Wenceslas.
First time mother RWR Udder Perfection U17 is living up to her name; full of milk and motherly love.

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, good will toward men.”

Marbling has long been considered essential to steak quality, but new research is highlighting the role of omega-3.

Said Hanrahan ... P.J.Hartigan 1879 - 1952._

“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
In accents most forlorn,
Outside the church, ere Mass began,
One frosty Sunday morn.

The congregation stood about,
Coat-collars to the ears,
And talked of stock, and crops, and drought,
As it had done for years.

“It’s looking crook,” said Daniel Croke;
“Bedad, it’s cruke, me lad,
For never since the banks went broke
Has seasons been so bad.”

“It’s dry, all right,” said young O’Neil,
With which astute remark
He squatted down upon his heel
And chewed a piece of bark.

And so around the chorus ran
“It’s keepin’ dry, no doubt.”
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”

“The crops are done; ye’ll have your work
To save one bag of grain;
From here way out to Back-o’-Bourke
They’re singin’ out for rain.

“They’re singin’ out for rain,” he said,
“And all the tanks are dry.”
The congregation scratched its head,
And gazed around the sky.

“There won’t be grass, in any case,
Enough to feed an ass;
There’s not a blade on Casey’s place
As I came down to Mass.”

“If rain don’t come this month,” said Dan,
And cleared his throat to speak —
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“If rain don’t come this week.”

A heavy silence seemed to steal
On all at this remark;
And each man squatted on his heel,
And chewed a piece of bark.

“We want an inch of rain, we do,”
O’Neil observed at last;
But Croke “maintained” we wanted two
To put the danger past.

“If we don’t get three inches, man,
Or four to break this drought,
We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”

In God’s good time down came the rain;
And all the afternoon
On iron roof and window-pane
It drummed a homely tune.

And through the night it pattered still,
And lightsome, gladsome elves
On dripping spout and window-sill
Kept talking to themselves.

It pelted, pelted all day long,
A-singing at its work,
Till every heart took up the song
Way out to Back-o’-Bourke.

And every creek a banker ran,
And dams filled overtop;
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“If this rain doesn’t stop.”

And stop it did, in God’s good time;
And spring came in to fold
A mantle o’er the hills sublime
Of green and pink and gold.

And days went by on dancing feet,
With harvest-hopes immense,
And laughing eyes beheld the wheat
Nid-nodding o’er the fence.

And, oh, the smiles on every face,
As happy lad and lass
Through grass knee-deep on Casey’s place
Went riding down to Mass.

While round the church in clothes genteel
Discoursed the men of mark,
And each man squatted on his heel,
And chewed his piece of bark.

“There’ll be bushfires for sure, me man,
There will, without a doubt;
We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”

The destock continues....
A few Said Hanrahan doubts starting to creep in.... After working hard to put ourselves in a position where we could grow into some further agistment we're now culling many of our beautiful breeders just to pay for hay this year.
Thankfully we have some great friends and neighbours who've been kind enough to open up their hay reserves for us.... But we'll be feeding for a while yet 🤦

A busy few weeks at home on the farm here. Out taking some photos of steers and bulls and can’t really go past RWR T12! Really liking how this fella is coming along. This year will be his second full year working on our herd after our AI programs wind up. He is having a rest before he starts his part time seasonal work🤭.

Looks like it's "Take the lad to Work Day" at our place.
Not really his son, but the work experience lad is taking it very seriously in the front paddock.... so much so he blew his pooper valve a month or so back 🤦. The set back does not seemed to have daunted his spirit though!

The maternity ward has come alive this week! Walked out this morning to find that RWR Snowdrop S12, one of our crowd favourites, had just delivered a highly anticipated... Bull 🤦. A leggy fella too!

Might need to use some sexed semen next year I think!

Due to the drought here in SA we need to drop our cattle numbers to get through the next 12 months of feed shortage.
We have spent considerable time and effort developing a herd of commercial Angus that are beautifully quiet, as well as structurally sound and fertile, that we use as embryo recipients for our Speckle Park stud. These are high percentage Glatz Black Angus blood, with some Maryvale Angus blood. Given the time we have spent setting up this quiet nucleus we would rather pass this on than cull to the meatworks.
We have a number of Autumn calving (May-June) commercial breeders, some with CAF that we are looking to move on... Please contact us for more information!

We also have registered Speckle Park bulls, cows and heifers that may be available by negotiation.... Please contact us for more information!

Looking at cattle that have been bred out of the Melissa G44 line… Silhouette was one that
was one of our absolute favourites. No hoof trimming to make her pretty (we don't trying any of our cattle hooves, but some obviously do!), just a hair cut to make her look less fluffy and a wash. You couldn’t fault her structural soundness. ALL our animals arrived at the sale with nothing extra but a wash and a hair cut. Docility has never been an issue.
But there has been a massive flush and transplant mistake we weren't aware of, and a heifer calf has arrived out of this incredible line. Thick, structurally sound, capacity, growth under harsh conditions (made mating weight in the hardest year in 150years….. at 12months with not a single touch of grain or green grass or anything but crappy straw & salt lick; good hay when we could access it intermittently!)
This calf I will be keeping a close eye on. We will probably aim for a sexed heifer bull.
The smooth top line indicates carcass traits, from her smooth top line to her hips is where the prime cuts come from. She is exactly what we want to see!
You could wash Silhouette and she still would look as good!
