NSW SES Armidale Unit MISSION: Saving lives and creating safer communities. For assistance in floods and storms call 132500

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

A big thank you to the crew from Dumaresq Rural Fire Service for joining Armidale SES last Wednesday night for some joint Road Crash Rescue (RCR) training!

Inter-agency training like this is essential for sharpening our rescue capabilities and ensuring seamless coordination when responding to emergencies together across the region.

During the session, RFS volunteers jumped right in alongside our team to run through key procedures and hands-on scenarios, including:

🚗 Vehicle assessment & hazard management
📐 Vehicle stabilisation
🛠️ Extrication techniques
🚑 Casualty handling & care

A massive thanks again to Dumaresq RFS for their enthusiasm, time, and ongoing partnership. We look forward to more joint training sessions ahead! 🙌

Our Armidale NSW SES volunteers have officially completed the Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Australia.

At 6:30am with a water temperature of just 7°C, what seemed like a good idea from the shore became significantly more questionable once our feet hit the water!

Despite the icy conditions, our members were proud to take part alongside SES volunteers from across NSW to support a fantastic cause that promotes inclusion through sport for people with intellectual disability and autism.

And for those wondering - our Swiftwater Rescue operators made it safely back to shore and, thankfully, did not require rescuing themselves. 😄

Thank you to everyone who supported us to reach our goal, cheered us on, or joined in the plunge.

📸 Check out some photos (and screams) from the day!

🥶 Armidale SES is taking the Polar Plunge this Saturday!

Joining SES colleagues from across NSW, we'll be braving water temperatures of around 10°C with a chilly forecasted air temp of 0°C to support Special Olympics Australia and promote inclusion through sport.

We're also hoping our own Swiftwater Rescue operators won't need rescuing once they realise just how cold the water really is. 😄

The 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge is bigger than ever, with 26 plunges across Australia (4 July - 30 August) - bringing communities together to get freezin’ for a reason.

On Tuesday night our team was called out to help Elsie - a pregnant cow who had gotten herself stuck up to her chest in mud. Her owners did all the right things - calling for help, getting heavy machinery out and contacting their vet.

Using our specialised equipment we were able to loosen the mud holding her in and pull this mama to be out of the water. She was in a bit of shock and didn't want to stand up (relatable), so was made comfortable in situ.

These kinds of rescues are always a group effort with heavy machine operators, vets and other services. We want to give a special shout out to the Diggings Rural Fire Brigade who came out to help decontaminate our equipment and ourselves (although we would like to kindly request warm water next time!).
