Releaf Sustainability, growing our own food, recycling, improving the land, self-sufficiency and being caretakers of this land for future generations. includes YOU.

WELCOME TO RELEAF; the home of Pete and Lyn Kuhlmann. In 2003 we considered where we would like to be in ten years time. Our list of values and passions include, sustainability, growing our own food, recycling, improving the land, and through self-sufficiency taking on the responsibility of being caretakers of this land for ourselves and future generations. In 2004 the journey began, with the purc

hase of 88 acres of land at Angas Valley just north of Mannum, the land was cleared degraded farm land and we made the commitment to revegetate a large portion of the property,. hence the name.... Releaf. We have designed and built our own house, incorporating solar hot water with combustion heater back-up low pressure rain water, solar panels, and verandah and decking all around. There are large sheds with over 30 fruit trees, large shade house and vegetable garden. We have planted over 20,000 trees on the property, 50% of the land is now covered with trees and shrubs, with bird life increasing every year. THE FUTURE; so the next ten year journey.. Along the way, we have learnt a lot and met some wonderful people, but now it is time to share. Our plans...

Grey Shrike Thrush has laid three eggs second sitting this year.I can't use that roll of wire netting, more important for a bird nest.Top Knot has made a more substantial nest than usual and the Spur Wing Plover has eggs too.

Birds everywhere. Swallows and honey eaters nesting, a native hen constantly around the house and the grey shrike thrush has just hatched chicks under the shed veranda. Beautiful.

SANDALWOOD 5 weeks to start to send down the root. 4 weeks to shoot in pots and 8 weeks to shoot in the ground (buried a bit deeper in the ground) 350 planted among trees and 460 in pots. After I planted the first hundred I thought that I can't expect 100% success rate so to be realistic I planted one more.

“RELEAF”
KITCHEN GARDEN AND REVGETATION TOUR

In just over 10 years and less than 300mm of rainfall a year the
Kuhlmann’s have transformed a bare cropping paddock with owner- built home, productive veggie garden, orchard, and extensive revegetation.
A great example of what can be achieved in a harsh climate to increase self-sufficiency and improve habitat for native birds and wildlife.

IT'S NOT ABOUT SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT. IT'S ABOUT CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT DOES NOT NEED SAVING. How beautiful to have a honeyeater nesting in a potplant in the shadehouse less than a metre off the ground? How magnificent to hear the Australian Owlet Nightjar call at night quite regularly next to the bedroom window? This is the REAL WORLD.
