Read the life story of our fantastic AHP, Joan Dhamarrandjij. When Joan took a break from nursing in her early twenties to experience a different lifestyle, she came face to face with the deadly consequences of alcoholism. After five years on the streets of Darwin, Joan returned home to East Arnhem Land seeking a better life. Today, as an AHP focusing on mental well-being at Miwatj Aboriginal Health Corporation, she draws on her lived experience to help others in need.

That time of year is fast approaching again!

There are a multitude of ways to track your CPD. I'm a big fan of the Ausmed app. I find the app configuration and layout really user friendly and easy to navigate. This makes the task of logging those 30 hours considerably less daunting. Just make sure you download a copy of your log to ensure you have a backup!

Another hot tip for new players - I've learnt that logging my CPD as soon as Ive completed it makes my life much simpler when the end of the year rolls around. By keeping my portfolio contemporaneous and up to date, achieving and logging those 30 hours is much more manageable! Seems simple 😅 but makes a big difference.

Another great option is the Australian College of Paramedicine CPD Tracker.

How do you track your CPD? Comment below!

| OBR WHITEBOARD WEDNESDAY |

You are called priority 2 to a local GP clinic for an 18 year old patient. Dispatch informs you that your patient is currently in care of a doctor and nurse at the clinic. The clinic has requested that the patient be transported to hospital due to a suspected fracture.

You arrive at the clinic and deem that the scene is safe to approach.

The nurse on scene provides you with the following handover: "Bailey has presented to our clinic today after sustaining an injury in their footy game this morning. Bailey’s pronouns are they/them. Bailey reports that they were knocked to the ground during a tackle and landed on their left arm. At this point Bailey felt an immediate, severe pain in their left forearm. They were able to get themselves off the field and to the first aid tent where a SAM splint and sling were applied. On arrival to the clinic Bailey’s mid forearm was grossly swollen and extremely painful. No apparent break to the skin. Bailey had an initial pain score of 8/10 and they have been given 5mg of IM morphine about 15 minutes ago. Most recent pain score was 6/10. Other vitals have been stable, GCS 15, RR 16, HR 90, BP 110/80, Spo2 100%. Bailey denies sustaining a headstrike during the tackle and no other injuries appear to have been sustained. Bailey doesn’t have pain anywhere except for their left forearm."

Your own assessment of Bailey is as follows:

R - Bailey is alert to your arrival
A - Maintaining own
B - WOB normal. RR 16 and regular. Spo2 100%. Chest sounds clear and equal on auscultation.
C - Skin warm, cap refill

The 2022 NAIDOC Week poster is titled "Stronger". This piece was created by Gudanji/Wakaja artist Ryhia Dank.

Ryhia explains "I created this piece after reading this year’s National NAIDOC Week theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! I knew straight away I wanted to do a graphic piece centred around our flags with text highlighting what we have been through and are still fighting for” (source: https://www.naidoc.org.au/posters/2022-poster)

This year, NAIDOC Week spans from Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July. The 2021 NAIDOC theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show up!

This NAIDOC week, OBR will be leveraging our platform to centre and amplify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in order to bring greater awareness to what Ryhia aptly describes as what First Nations communities in Australia are "still fighting for".

Stay tuned!

In solidarity,
OBR Team
