Central Land Council The CLC is a Commonwealth corporate entity governed by 90 elected Aboriginal members There are 15 different Aboriginal language groups in Central Australia.

The roots of the CLC lie in the history of Aboriginal struggle for justice and our rights to our traditional land. The Land Rights Act gave Aboriginal people title to most of the Aboriginal reserve lands in the Northern Territory and gave the opportunity to claim other land not already owned, leased or being used by someone else. The Central Land Council region covers 771,747 square kilometres of

remote, rugged and often inaccessible areas. Due to the dispersed population and large geographical areas, CLC staff travel more than a million kilometres in their work every year. The CLC region is divided into nine regions based around these language groups. Today Aboriginal people make up 27 per cent of the Northern Territory's population with more than 24,000 Aboriginal people living in Central Australia. Aboriginal people own 49 percent of the land in the Northern Territory. The Central Land Council is a representative body promoting Aboriginal rights. It is a statutory authority under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. It also has functions under the Native Title Act 1993 and the Pastoral Land Act 1992.

H5 bird flu is spreading around Australia and you may start to see sick or dead birds. It’s not easy for people to get this bird flu, but it can be serious. It’s important that you do not touch sick birds.

Our ranger and programs manager Boyd Elston explains what to do:

1. Avoid any sick or dead birds.
2. Record when and where you saw them. Also take photos and videos if you can.
3. Report any sightings to the emergency animal disease hotline on 1800 675 888 as soon as possible. You can also tell a vet or our rangers and they can get help.

The Central Land Council joined the march at the Gurindji Freedom Day Festival in Kalkaringi.

We followed the footsteps of Vincent Lingiari and the brave families who first walked off Wave Hill Station in August 1966, and kicked off the long road to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, which became law in 1976.

In this video, CLC chair Warren Williams speaks about why this hardship was worth it and reminds us why we still walk today.

CLC delegates chose the winner of the Delegates Choice Award during our council meeting this week in Kalkaringi.

The award is part of the Vincent Lingiari Art Award, presented by the Central Land Council with our friends at Desart Incorporated to celebrate 50 years of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act through the exhibition Our Country, Our Culture.

Mr Lingiari’s granddaughter, Rosie Smiler, was there to witness the voting and announce the winner. She’ll join us again in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on September 10 at the Araluen Arts Centre, where the winners of the $10,000 Vincent Lingiari Art Award, and the $2,000 Delegates Choice Award will be revealed at the Desert Mob opening.

But you don’t have to wait until September to get involved. The Vincent Lingiari Art Award exhibition is now open, and voting for the People’s Choice Award is already underway.

It's sixty years since 200 Gurindji, Mudbarra, and Warlpiri workers and their families walked off Wave Hill Station in protest and kicked off the land rights movement.

Today hundreds gathered in Kalkaringi for the Freedom Day march to honour this.

Our delegates joined the march, after wrapping up three days of council, continuing the important work of the Wave Hill protestors, protecting country, culture, and people. ✊🏾
