Over the last week, the members of our 75th Recruit Academy have been hard at work training on vehicle extrication and technical rescue scenarios. These hands-on evolutions challenge recruits to apply the skills they’ve learned in the classroom while developing the teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities required on the fireground.

With just over a month remaining before they transition into the stations, the academy is continuing to build the foundation necessary for a successful career in the fire service. We are proud of the hard work and dedication these recruits have shown throughout the academy.

A special thank you goes to our Training Division for the outstanding job they continue to do preparing the next generation of Wichita Falls firefighters. I would also like to thank the members of A-Shift who took time to assist with training and share their knowledge and experience with our recruits. The time, effort, and mentorship invested by both our Training Division and operational personnel will have a lasting impact on these future firefighters and the citizens they will serve.

Today was a truly special day for the Wichita Falls Fire Department, the Crush family, and our entire community as we officially dedicated and opened Kelly Crush Memorial Park.

The tremendous outpouring of support shown today was a testament to the impact Kelly had on so many lives. More than a decade after his passing, people continue to remember his courage, his strength, his sense of humor, and his unwavering commitment to serving others. Seeing so many friends, family members, firefighters, city leaders, and community members come together to honor his legacy was incredibly meaningful.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Wichita Falls Firefighters Association for bringing this idea forward and for providing today’s meal. Thank you to Mayor Tim Short, Councilor Battaglino, and the rest of the Wichita Falls City Council as well as the City Manager’s Office, Parks Department, City staff, and Falls Truck Center for their support and partnership in making this vision a reality.

We would also like to thank the Wichita Falls Fire and Police Museum for bringing so many amazing trucks.

A special thank you goes to everyone who attended today’s ceremony, shared memories, and helped make this dedication such a fitting tribute. Kelly’s legacy of service, perseverance, brotherhood, and compassion continues to inspire us today.

As families gather, children play, and future generations enjoy this park, they will be reminded of a man who dedicated his life to serving others and who never stopped fighting for what mattered most.

Thank you, Wichita Falls, for helping us ensure that Kelly’s legacy will live on for generations to come.

Today, the Wichita Falls Fire Department proudly recognizes two outstanding members who have dedicated themselves to serving our community and leading by example.

Congratulations to Captain Devin Fulton on his promotion to Captain. Devin first joined the Wichita Falls Fire Department in 2009 before answering the call to serve our nation through a successful military career. After returning to the WFFD in 2016, he continued to distinguish himself through his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to service. Promoted to Fire Equipment Operator in 2019 and Lieutenant in 2024, Devin has consistently demonstrated a servant’s heart and unwavering dedication to both his fellow firefighters and the citizens of Wichita Falls. We are grateful for his service to our country and our community and know he will excel in his new role as Captain.

We also congratulate Lieutenant Garrett Coleman on his promotion to Lieutenant. Since joining the Wichita Falls Fire Department in 2013, Garrett has earned a reputation as a hardworking, dependable firefighter with an exceptional work ethic. After promoting to Fire Equipment Operator in 2021, he continued to lead by example and demonstrate his commitment to excellence. Garrett’s dedication, professionalism, and leadership have made a positive impact throughout the department, and we are confident he will continue to serve the citizens of Wichita Falls and his fellow firefighters with distinction as a Lieutenant.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Devin Fulton and Lieutenant Garrett Coleman on these well-earned promotions.

Preparedness starts long before an emergency happens. 🔥🌪️🌧️

The Wichita Falls Fire Department created the Wildfire–All Hazards Coordinator position to help close the gap between emergency planning and emergency response.

This role focuses on reducing risk before disasters happen. Whether that’s wildfire mitigation, severe weather preparation, flooding response, ice events, or other all-hazard situations that impact our community.

By planning ahead, strengthening partnerships, and helping coordinate preparedness efforts, this position helps make Wichita Falls safer and more resilient year-round.

Preparedness is a community effort, and we’re committed to continuing that work every day.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them wear 45 pounds of gear and an oxygen mask.

The most important wildfire preparation zone may be the one closest to your home. 🔥🏠

The home ignition zone includes the first 0–5 feet around your house, and keeping this area clear of flammable materials can help reduce wildfire risk.

Remove leaves, mulch, and wood piles
Use gravel, stone, or other noncombustible materials
Check vents and screens to help keep embers out
Choose outdoor furniture and décor that are less likely to ignite

Small changes can make a big difference when it matters most.
Protect the zone. Protect your home.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Reliable Auto Salvage for their continued partnership and support in training for one of the most challenging tasks we perform.

By allowing Wichita Falls Fire Department personnel to train in realistic, non-emergency conditions, they play a vital role in helping our crews refine the life-saving techniques required during vehicle extrications. Their support directly contributes to improving the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of emergency response efforts for our community.

Fire-resistant plants, proper spacing, and noncombustible landscaping materials can help slow the spread of wildfire and better protect homes, and the Fire Station 1 landscaping demonstrates how fire-wise design can make a difference. We were able to find these plants at Smith's Gardentown.
