Deaf Sports Recreation South Australia

Deaf Sports Recreation South Australia Supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing children & adults participate in community activities, sport & recreation for healthy lifestyles

DCSSA is run by Deaf/Hard of Hearing board members, staff and volunteers. The genesis of what is currently known as DCSSA was the “Deaf Committee” established by South Australian Deaf people in 1911 as a formal communication link between the Deaf Community and the Deaf Society. In 1984, after seven successful decades of operation, the Deaf Committee was folded into a newly-established incorporated

association (DCSSA) formed to obtain a bar licence and lease on the Adelaide Deaf Centre. By 2009, twenty-five years after its establishment, DSRSA was somewhat in decline, with a membership of less than 25 people and very few affiliated Groups/Clubs. A “rescue bid” was mounted by several Deaf Community members who were able to successfully achieve a radical turnaround of the organisation. So from 2009, under new management and organizational structures, the Association grew rapidly, with turnover increasing four-fold (from around $30,000 pa to more than $120,000 pa), membership increasing ten-fold (from less than 25 to more than 250) and substantial growth in affiliated Groups/Clubs, volunteers, collections and sponsorship.
