Local Government Association of South Australia

Local Government Association of South Australia The LGA is the peak representative body for local government in South Australia. We’re here to help local government build stronger communities.

Since 1896, our work has backed local decision-making and today supports councils across South Australia. We do this in many ways. For one, we lead advocacy and discussions with state and federal decision-makers and key stakeholders. We make sure the issues affecting our communities are heard, loud and clear. We also help local government be at the top of their game. We provide training and networking opportunities, secure funding for projects, and work hard to reduce risk and save members money. And community is at the heart of everything we do. Because we know if our local governments are thriving, then our communities are, too. Our President, Heather Holmes-Ross - Mayor of City of Mitcham chatted with ABC Adelaide's Rory McClaren live from the Royal Adelaide Show this morning about the role of councils.

While roads and rubbish are central to what councils do, local government's mandate extends wider to include other important areas like:
πŸ‘‰ immunisation services
πŸ‘‰ libraries
πŸ‘‰ community facilities
πŸ‘‰ parks and ovals
πŸ‘‰ sport and recreation
πŸ‘‰ wellbeing programs
πŸ‘‰ food safety inspections
πŸ‘‰ climate resilience
πŸ‘‰ emergency support during disasters
πŸ‘‰ and much more.

All these things improve the economic, social, physical and environment aspects of our neighbourhoods and suburbs to build stronger, more liveable communities.
