This exhibition in conjunction with the History Month at historic Beaumont House celebrates the six Pioneer Women of Adelaide, who made a significant impact on the early days of our settlement. The six women on display are;
MARY LEE,
AUGUSTA ZADOW,
CATHERINE SPENCE,
LADY DAVENPORT,
MURIEL MATTERS
and DAISY BATES.

A presentation by Sandy Whitelaw will be held on each exhibition date from 1.00PM to 2.00PM, about these inspiring women.

Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for visitors to enjoy during their visit, provided by Burnside Branch volunteers

Beaumont House, 631 Glynburn Rd Beaumont, built in 1849 as Claremont, by Bishop Augustus Short and wife Millicent (nee Phillips), the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide. From 1857, the home of Sir Samuel Davenport and wife Margaret (nee Cleland), politician, horticulturist & pioneer of the olive oil industry in SA. In 1907 Major William Vincent and wife Alice (nee Buzzard) were the owners followed in 1911 by lawyer Richard Bennett KC and wife Lilian (nee Brocksopp). Richard died in 1929 and Lilian married Mr Kenneth Brock in 1936. The property was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1970 by the Brock’s.

Part of the original Olive Grove from the 1860’s exists behind the house, along with very old palms, magnificent stone pines, cottage garden beds, a perfume garden, herb and vegetable garden and many old and new fruit trees, with sweeping lawns surrounding the house, managed by Merilyn Kuchel and her band of garden volunteers.

The Burnside Branch is hosting a costume exhibition with the assistance of Sandy Whitelaw at Beaumont House for a week from Sunday 11 Aug until Sunday 18 Aug 2024, 10am-3pm each day.

Sandy will be giving a talk on ‘Victorian Mourning Traditions’ at 11am on each Sunday.
The admission fee is $25 ($20 for members) and includes some must have goodies with coffee/tea also available.

Halloween is almost here!

We are so looking forward to welcoming the kids through our trail on Sunday 31st of October. We have some spooky tricks and sweet treats ready for Sunday, we can't wait to open the void to the supernatural!

A few things to remember for our trail walkers:

- This is a Covid-19 safe event - we recommend masks worn by all adults (the scarier the better obviously!) Contact tracing check-in will be mandatory for all entering through the gates.
- $5.00 entry - any donations big or small for Beaumont House are appreciated.
- We will be taking trail walkers in half hour intervals starting at 4:30pm. Message us directly to advise how many children in your group and approximately what time you're planning to arrive.
- We estimate the trail will take around 20 minutes from start to finish. This gives you plenty of time afterwards for Glynburn Road trick or treating!
- You don't need to purchase tickets to this event - first in first served!

We are so excited for Halloween!

We will be taking trail walkers through the Haunted Trail from 4:30pm on Halloween evening. We can't wait to see the creepy costumes the kids of Adelaide are coming up with!

Claremont Cottage was built in 1849 by Augustus Short who was the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide. He was married to Millicent Phillips. Purchased by Sir Samuel Davenport and wife Margaret Cleland in 1857, Davenport was a politician, horticulturist and pioneer of SA's olive oil, wine, silk, and perfume industries. In 1907 the cottage was purchased by Major William Vincent and wife Alice Buzzard, and in 1911 by lawyer Richard Bennett and his bohemian wife Lillian Brocksopp. He died in 1929 and she married Kenneth Brock in 1936. The property was bequeathed to the National Trust of South Australia in 1970.

Tour the stunning house, wander through the beautiful gardens, olive groves and enjoy afternoon tea on the verandah overlooking the garden, city of Adelaide and gulf.

We have a COVID Safe Plan in place.
