Meet Rusty, a giant steel sculpture of Australia’s largest known marsupial, now standing proudly at Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre on Kangaroo Island.

Inspired by the ancient megafauna that once roamed the area, Rusty is the newest resident of the park and the perfect photo stop before heading off to explore Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and beyond.

Next time you're visiting Flinders Chase, be sure to say "G'day" to one of the area's largest locals 🤎

Follow Environment SA News for up-to-date information on prescribed burns happening in your area this autumn.

A prescribed burn is planned at Lake Hawdon North Conservation Park on the Limestone Coast on Thursday, weather conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn will start at 11.15am on Thursday 11 June and is likely to be completed by 6pm.

Smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.

▪️The area to be burnt is 151 hectares at Lake Hawdon North, 13km east of Robe.
▪️Aircraft will be used to help deliver this burn, which is the fourth in a series at this site.
▪️The aim of the burn is to enhance habitat for threatened species by removing vegetation from the rehabilitated lake area to provide habitat for wetland birds.
▪️No roads or trails will be closed.
▪️Smoke may be visible from Old Naracoorte Road.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.

National Parks and Wildlife Service are extremely proud to congratulate Michael (Mike) Wouters who was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the King’s Birthday 2026 Honours List having been nominated as a member of the NPWS Brigade of the SA Country Fire Service.

Mike worked for NPWS from 2004 until his retirement in 2022, bringing a wealth of knowledge, passion and leadership in the science of fire behaviour and fire ecology.

Significantly, Mike led the establishment and development of a fire behaviour analyses function and an incident mapping team that support the SA CFS during bushfire incidents.

He also chaired the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council’s Predictive Services Group during the challenging period following the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires.

Mike Wouters’ dedication to the fire and emergency services sector at both state and national level makes him a very a worthy recipient of the AFSM.

We’re proud to share that we recently opened a new, fully accessible Changing Places facility at Belair National Park.

A Changing Places facility is larger than a standard accessible toilet, with a height adjustable adult change table, ceiling hoist and room for two people either side of a peninsula toilet.

Changing Places facilities offer the highest level of accessibility to ensure people with disability and high support needs have access to safe, suitable, and specialised bathroom facilities in their community.

Here are some of the ways we’re making your visit to Belair National Park easier and more inclusive:
✅ Accessible toilets including a Changing Places facility
✅ Accessible walks
✅ Accessibility trike / all-terrain assisted wheelchair, free to hire
✅ Accessible picnic areas and tennis courts
✅ Accessible carparking
✅ Social scripts
✅ Adventure Playground

The build of the Changing Places facility received funding from the Australian Government through the Commonwealth Accessible Australia Initiative.

National Parks are for everyone to enjoy.
