๐Ÿฆœ Happy World Parrot Day! ๐Ÿฆœ

Today weโ€™re celebrating the incredible beauty, diversity and intelligence of parrots!

Weโ€™re lucky to be surrounded by some truly gorgeous parrots in Adelaide, Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and Wittunga Botanic Garden.

From the shy but beautiful Eastern Rosella and Adelaide Rosella to the very cheeky Rainbow Lorikeets, these birds bring our gardens to life every day.

With their vibrant feathers, intricate behaviours and playful curiosity, they reflect the remarkable diversity of Australiaโ€™s native species. ๐Ÿฆœ

Seed by seed, species by species โ€“ weโ€™re working to safeguard South Australiaโ€™s unique plant life.

But 1/3 of our native plant species are at risk due to the impacts of climate change, pests and more.

Thatโ€™s why seed conservation matters.

Every seed is a second chance.

National Reconciliation Week, 27 May - 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn, reflect and walk together toward a connected future.

This yearโ€™s theme, All In, is a reminder that isnโ€™t a once a year moment. Itโ€™s a daily commitment we all share, and every action, big or small, matters.

At Adelaide Botanic Garden, you can deepen your understanding through a First Nations cultural tour.

Our tour providers share powerful stories about native plants in the Gardenโ€™s living collection, including how theyโ€™ve been used for generations for food, tools, medicine and ongoing cultural practices.

As you walk through the Garden, youโ€™ll also learn about the rich social history of local Aboriginal people and their deep connections to community, culture and Country.

Itโ€™s a chance to slow down, listen and connect with knowledge that has shaped this land for tens of thousands of years.

Head to https://bit.ly/4nSSAyb for more info on booking a cultural tour this reconciliation week.

๐˜ ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ reveals how materials, selfhood and society are tested - and transformed - under pressure. The exhibition features 24 artists who push and reshape their mediums to create rich, layered experiences across Art Gallery of South Australia, Samstag Museum of Art and the Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Installations in Adelaide Botanic Garden feature works by Archie Moore - ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜–๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, inside the Museum of Economic Botany.

You'll also find inspiring works inside the Bicentennial Conservatory by Robert Andrew - ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜บ, ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ, ๐˜Œ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ, ๐˜š๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ, ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ and Erika Scott - ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ด.

Pumpkin playdate at Adelaide Zoo! ๐Ÿฏ

It was a special day recently when Adelaide Botanic Garden staff delivered a fresh harvest surprise to our neighbours at Adelaide Zoo

Straight from the Kitchen Garden, these homegrown pumpkins were grown for their size (not too tasty for humans) but are also an enriching treat for zoo animals. Enrichment helps keep animals active, curious and mentally stimulated.

First stop, the Sumatran tiger habitat. Marni wasted no time, turning her pumpkin into both a toy and a treat.

Next up was the tortoise enclosure. Aonika, an Aldabra Tortoise and her friend, Imara, the African Spurred Tortoise took a slower, steadier approach. No wild antics here, just a leisurely munch at tortoise pace.

From playful predators to relaxed reptiles, these pumpkins were a hit all round!

Every seed is a second chance. ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ”ฌImportant research has uncovered a surprising finding: several ๐˜—๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด species (commonly known as Pussy-tails or Fox-tails), once grouped together as the widespread ๐˜—๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ด, are actually distinct species found only in South Australia, each surviving in small, isolated pockets.

While this discovery is exciting for science, it raises serious concerns for conservation. Seed collections are critically low, there is only a single collection of true ๐˜—๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ด (just 100 seeds from one site), ๐˜—๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฅ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด is represented by only 350 seeds, and ๐˜—๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด is not held in the seed bank at all.

These species are under increasing pressure from grazing animals, reduced flowering, and a rapidly warming, drying climate. Without seeds, there can be no next generation, and without a seed bank, there is no safety net if wild populations are lost.

Collecting these seeds isnโ€™t left to chance, it takes careful planning, expert knowledge, and boots-on-the-ground fieldwork, often in some of the toughest and most remote parts of the state. Every collection is an investment in the future.
You can be part of that journey. With your support, we can reach more locations, collect more seeds, and give these unique plants a real chance to thrive.

Donate today and help safeguard South Australiaโ€™s unique flora.
