SA Community Visitor Scheme - CVS

SA Community Visitor Scheme - CVS We provide clients with advocacy and assistance to ensure mental health and disability services are appropriate to needs.

The Community Visitor Scheme is an independent statutory body, reporting to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing on matters related to the scheme’s functions under the Mental Health Act 2009 and to the Minister for Human Services on matters related to the scheme’s functions under the Disability Services (Community Visitor Scheme) Regulations 2013. The purpose of the Community Visitor Scheme is to

further protect the rights of people with a mental illness who are admitted to mental health care units and people with a disability who live in a state-run disability accommodation facility. The independence of the Community Visitor Scheme is integral to the program, enabling patients/residents, carers and family members to speak with individuals who are not associated with the provision of support.

National Volunteer Week (19 – 25 May 2025) provides the perfect opportunity for us to acknowledge and thank our supportive team of dedicated volunteer Community Visitors.

This year’s theme is “Connecting Communities” and celebrates the power of volunteering to bring people together.

We would like to thank our volunteer Community Visitors who give their time, skills and passion to promote the wellbeing, dignity, safety and rights of people living with a mental health condition receiving care from a mental health service; living with a disability in a state-run disability service; or who are under the guardianship of the Public Advocate and participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

As a volunteer-led Scheme, the CVS protects people’s rights, while continually supporting the improvement and enhancement of care services.

We encourage you to take part in the “Colour Your Community Red” campaign to celebrate and thank volunteers across South Australia by wearing red or decorating your letterbox or front window with something red.
