SA beekeepers, important update to bee entry requirements.

Entry requirements for moving bees into SA have changed to reflect the current varroa situation.
The previous 2023 notice has been revoked, and a new gazette notice and Biosecurity Standards are now in place. These updates support business continuity for beekeepers and pollination dependent industries while strengthening varroa management.

Key changes include:
◾New conditions for interstate bee movements
◾Updated requirements for Apiary Health Certificates
◾Entry applications and pre/post entry conditions for movements from varroa positive areas
◾Ongoing obligations to notify and manage varroa
◾Updated PIRSA forms and online options for registration and movement applications

Requirements for Kangaroo Island remain unchanged.

These changes help keep SA’s bee industry protected and responsive as the varroa landscape evolves.

To help residents, growers and industry stay informed, PIRSA has launched a new weekly fruit fly detections map. Updated every Sunday, the interactive map shows the number of detections recorded in red outbreak zones over the previous week.

The new tool provides a clearer picture of fruit fly activity across South Australia, helping the community understand where heightened vigilance is needed and supporting on-farm decision-making, backyard garden hygiene and compliance with movement restrictions.

It’s mobile friendly too, so you can easily check activity while you’re out in the field or in the garden.

Last month, we partnered with the National Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life (NCTDDL) as part of the SA Wine Recovery Program, to host the Vineyard Post Reuse Pilot Showcase for industry leaders and stakeholders.

The event marked an important milestone for the Timber Circularity Project, showcasing innovative technology developed by the FABAL Group to repurpose vineyard posts for reuse. Attendees saw the technology in action, learned about the project's progress, and explored opportunities to support a circular economy for CCA-treated timber across the wine, forestry and agricultural sectors.

The showcase also highlighted key learnings from field testing and the next steps in developing practical, sustainable solutions for treated vineyard timber.

By working together across industry, research and government, we are helping create new pathways that reduce waste, recover valuable resources and support more sustainable industries into the future.

🐖✨ Kangaroo Island declared feral‑pig free… a world‑first achievement!

Kangaroo Island has officially been declared free of feral pigs, making it the largest island in the world to successfully eradicate an established population.

This is a major win for the island’s environment, native species and agricultural industries, following a coordinated program that removed 878 feral pigs and completed two years of intensive surveillance with no detections.

The program was delivered with support from the Australian and South Australian Governments, industry partners and the Kangaroo Island community, and is now being recognised as a flagship example of best‑practice invasive species management.

PIRSA had a fantastic few days at Hort Connections 2026, connecting with growers, researchers and industry leaders from across Australia.

Our teams from PIRSA and SARDI were on the ground throughout the event, supported by Department of State Development and Green Industries SA. The booth was a great space for one‑on‑one conversations about fruit fly, Varroa mite, brown marmorated stink bug, giant pine scale, drought support and the Fab Mentor Program.

Highlights from the week:
✅ 3,900+ delegates attending
✅ 1,100 guests at the National Hort Awards dinner
✅ Mike Rettke recognised as a finalist for the National Horticulture Research and Development Award
✅ Strong collaboration with DSD Invest SA and Green Industries SA

We also heard valuable insights from industry on rising production costs, innovation in food science and technology, and ongoing biosecurity priorities.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, we loved hearing your experiences and continuing the conversation.

“All in” for Pondi 🐟

River Murray & Mallee Aboriginal Corporation rangers and SARDI Inland Waters scientists have completed their annual electrofishing monitoring of Pondi (Murray cod) along the lower River Murray, recording strong signs of a healthy and reproducing population.

A total of 29 fish were caught across a wide range of sizes, including new recruits, highlighting successful recruitment and a positive outlook for this culturally significant species.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, through The Flow-MER Program, the monitoring brings together cultural knowledge and science to better understand and support the health of the river system.

Now in its second year, the collaboration continues to strengthen partnerships, support knowledge sharing, and help guide future environmental water management.

SARDI is a proud, southern delivery partner the Integrated Marine Observing System - IMOS. IMOS is a critical - largely wet! - network-of-tech, enabled by science expertise around the country.

In SA, SARDI has relied heavily on critical IMOS research infrastructure to track and monitor SA’s harmful algal bloom.

Thumbs up for ongoing investment in ocean science in real time!

🚗📱 You may sometimes notice Fruit Fly Officers sitting in parked vehicles or using mobile devices between property visits. This is a normal part of their work as they support South Australia’s fruit fly response.

If you've seen our staff sitting in cars or on properties using iPads and devices, that's good news.

Our field teams use these tools all day long to access real-time information from their supervisors about their tasks for the day and to record data that is used to monitor and report on fruit fly detection and eradication progress. Devices also help supervisors monitor daily progress and any safety concerns.

SARDI are working collaboratively with University of New England, AU and Primary Industries and Regional Development on a Clean Breeding project to measure methane emissions on thousands of genetically profiled sheep across the country in order to develop an emission breeding value for the sheep industry.

Last month, over 2 weeks, the team from Turretfield travelled to two properties in SA and set up on-farm portable methane chambers.

We had the pleasure of visiting Inverbrackie Border Leicester in Finniss, and Days Whiteface in Bordertown.

It’ is so rewarding to connect and collaborate with interstate researchers and local producers to undertake meaningful research to tackle methane emission reduction for the sheep industry.

This project is co-funded by Meat & Livestock Australia, the Global Methane Genetics (GMG) initiative, Australian Wool Innovation, University of New England, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA).
