RGPSA is here to support medical students and junior doctors as they consider or pursue a career working in rural generalism – whether just finding out about it, or working out which college they’ll apply to!

We recently supported Flinders University Rural Health Society and Adelaide University Rural Health Alliance (AURHA) as they threw their collaborative 2026 Rural Health Gala for students, sponsored by our counterparts at RACGP.

It was a great night for people to network and learn more about rural medicine – as well as take the chance to snap some photos in the RGPSA photobooth!

Well done to everyone who took part – whether organising or attending. These events are a fantastic way to help build knowledge around the incredible opportunities that rural pathways have to offer.

Networking, career-planning and breakfast.

That’s what you get when you bring together our regional health networks, the rural generalist colleges, and dozens of students from Adelaide and Flinders universities – and we call it the RGPSA Rural Medical Expo!

In April we hosted the second annual Expo – this year down in spectacular Victor Harbor in Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network. A few brave souls caught the bus from the city in the early hours, and were treated to a moving Welcome to Country, a presentation from a local doctor, and panel sessions with Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and RACGP + all of the regional networks.

Did you know many of the doctors caring for rural communities in South Australia began their careers overseas?

That’s why we recently welcomed a group of international medical graduates (IMGs) to our new IMG Orientation Workshop, as they prepare to take their first steps into rural practice.

Over two days, they had a refresh on clinical skills that are crucial to working in frontline Australian healthcare, as well as cultural and communication presentations to assist in patient care.

For our rural communities, programs like this help ensure doctors feel supported, prepared, and ready to provide high-quality care from day one.

For our rural generalists and health teams, it means stronger support on the ground, and colleagues who are set up to succeed and thrive.

We’re proud to be supporting the next generation of South Australian doctors as they begin their journey with us.

Strengthening support for our rural generalist training.

The first Yorke & Northern Joint Supervisors Network Dinners were held in Clare on 18 November and Wallaroo on 19 November bringing together the regional local health network teams where rural generalists work, the colleges overseeing their training, and the supervisors guiding them day-to-day to create an opportunity to build networks, develop the next generation of supervisors, share knowledge, support high-quality training, and encourage regional collaboration.
Across the two nights, attendees heard from:
- Dr Lisa White on navigating difficult conversations
- Prof Luci Walters on giving and receiving feedback
- Dr Eleanor Daniel on PGY1 and 2 program requirements, assessments, outcomes, and entrustable professional activities

A big thank you to our presenters for generously volunteering their time, and to and for their support.
Have a topic you’d like to explore at a future dinner? Drop it in the comments! 👇

We enjoyed our time at the recent RACGP GP25 conference in Brisbane. The National Rural Generalist Pathway jurisdictions shared a booth for a one stop shop on rural generalism in Australia.

Look out for us at future national conferences.

We are excited to be at the Conference in Brisbane.

👋 Come say hello to us and the other National Rural Generalist Pathway teams at stand 92.

This week, the final term of Road to Rural Interns for 2025 commenced their rural rotations! 🩺

For interns based in metropolitan hospitals, the Road to Rural (R2R) Intern program is a valuable rural generalist experience early in their careers where they are an integral part of the rural health team and have a genuine opportunity to experience life in a rural community.

Before leaving for country, Interns attend an orientation session at RDWA run by RDWA EDMS, Dr Tim Kelly, and Dr Lisa Koo. This session prepares them for their 10-week rotation with a refresher on practical skills for general practice, an overview of what to expect in the local practice, and information about the support available to them during the term.

We wish them a great rural generalist experience!
