At , Malta 🇲🇹 convened a side event on “Multisectoral Approaches to Address the Nexus between Criminal Justice and Public Health”, co-sponsored by Australia 🇦🇺, Belgium 🇧🇪 , Canada 🇨🇦, Colombia 🇨🇴 , Norway 🇳🇴 , Sweden 🇸🇪 , Switzerland 🇨🇭, and the UNODC HIV/AIDS Section 🇺🇳, which was moderated by Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger.
🎙️ Panellists from UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, The Malta Police Force, and NGOs shared practical experiences on addressing this nexus in a just, effective, and evidence-based manner.
Superintendent Joseph Busuttil highlighted the Malta Police Force’s community policing strategy, emphasizing partnerships with communities, schools, and NGOs to strengthen prevention, build trust, and deliver sustainable public safety outcomes.
Ms. Gorica Popovic-Mostarac ( ) stressed the importance of connecting criminal justice and public health systems, noting that coordinated and evidence-based responses are essential to improve prevention, care, and safety outcomes.
Mr. Jac Charlier, Executive Director of TASC’s Center for Health and Justice and CEO of PTACC, presented deflection as a model that links law enforcement and treatment, enabling early community-based interventions and reducing reliance on punitive responses.
Mr. Darren Nicholas, Assistant Director of Services at Cranstoun, shared experiences from a Whole System Approach, integrating criminal justice and health through holistic assessments, early interventions, referrals, and harm reduction services.
