The Permanent Mission of Malta 🇲🇹 is participating for the first time as a full member of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in its 69th session 🇺🇳.

Addressing the Committee, Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger underscored Malta's commitment to multilateralism and the rules-based international order, deeming them essential for unleashing the full potential of outer space for the benefit of humanity.

🇲🇹 highlighted the establishment of a Space Directorate, sustained investment in STEM education, the use of satellite imagery and AI-driven geospatial analytics and support to Maltese startups in this vibrant sector. This is reinforced with Malta's international engagement, with COPUOS membership and the recent accession to the Artemis Accords.

Malta looks forward to contributing constructively to COPUOS and its subcommittees, and to ensuring that the voice of small states is heard in shaping the future of outer space governance.

🎓Last week, Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger had the pleasure to engage with a group of 20 students during a fireside chat on ‘Gender-Sensitive Policymaking in Practice’, organised by the OSCE – The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Gender Issues Programme and - Students Advocating for Gender Equality at the Diplomatische Akademie Wien.

The discussion explored the role of leadership, diplomacy, and public policy in advancing gender equality, as well as the importance of perseverance in driving meaningful institutional change. Ambassador Camilleri Vettiger also reflected on what inspired her to pursue a career in diplomacy, shared her experiences of navigating resistance and institutional challenges when advocating for gender equality, and spoke candidly about the importance of strategic patience and perseverance when progress seems too slow. She also exchanged views with participants on the role of young people in shaping more inclusive policies and leadership structures, offering practical advice on how they can contribute meaningfully to advancing gender-sensitive policymaking today.

🤝The exchange highlighted the value of dialogue between policymakers and the next generation of leaders in advancing democratic and inclusive governance.

At , Malta 🇲🇹 convened a side event on “Multisectoral Approaches to Address the Nexus between Criminal Justice and Public Health”, co-sponsored by Australia 🇦🇺, Belgium 🇧🇪 , Canada 🇨🇦, Colombia 🇨🇴 , Norway 🇳🇴 , Sweden 🇸🇪 , Switzerland 🇨🇭, and the UNODC HIV/AIDS Section 🇺🇳, which was moderated by Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger.

🎙️ Panellists from UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, The Malta Police Force, and NGOs shared practical experiences on addressing this nexus in a just, effective, and evidence-based manner.

Superintendent Joseph Busuttil highlighted the Malta Police Force’s community policing strategy, emphasizing partnerships with communities, schools, and NGOs to strengthen prevention, build trust, and deliver sustainable public safety outcomes.

Ms. Gorica Popovic-Mostarac ( ) stressed the importance of connecting criminal justice and public health systems, noting that coordinated and evidence-based responses are essential to improve prevention, care, and safety outcomes.

Mr. Jac Charlier, Executive Director of TASC’s Center for Health and Justice and CEO of PTACC, presented deflection as a model that links law enforcement and treatment, enabling early community-based interventions and reducing reliance on punitive responses.

Mr. Darren Nicholas, Assistant Director of Services at Cranstoun, shared experiences from a Whole System Approach, integrating criminal justice and health through holistic assessments, early interventions, referrals, and harm reduction services.

The Embassy of Malta in Austria and Permanent Mission of Malta to the OSCE, UN and other International Organizations extends its warmest congratulations to Hon. Dr Chris Fearne on his appointment as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and wishes him every success as he assumes his new responsibilities at the helm of Malta’s foreign and European policy.

As he takes on this important role, we recall with deep appreciation his dedicated service as former Minister for Health. His steady leadership and steadfast commitment throughout the COVID-19 pandemic earned him widespread respect in Malta and beyond. We look forward to working closely with Minister Fearne in advancing Malta’s foreign policy priorities and in further deepening the strong ties between Malta and Austria, while enhancing Malta’s engagement on the international stage.

The Embassy also expresses its sincerest gratitude to Hon. Dr Ian Borg for his distinguished service as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism. His tenure was marked by Malta’s leadership in key international fora at a time of significant global challenges, including the Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2025, the OSCE Chairpersonship here in Vienna in 2024, and Malta’s term on the United Nations Security Council in 2023–2024. We wish him every success in his new role as Minister for Health.

The Permanent Mission of Malta 🇲🇹 is participating in the 35th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice . 🇺🇳

Delivering the national statement, H.E. Dr Francesca Camilleri Vettiger highlighted Malta’s continued efforts to strengthen its crime prevention and criminal justice systems. She underlined the ongoing development of Malta’s Community Policing Model, further reinforced by the Malta Police Force Strategy 2025–2030. She also drew attention to initiatives focused on prevention and rehabilitation, including the “Second Chance Project”, aimed at reducing crime and recidivism.

Reaffirming Malta’s commitment to an effective and efficient criminal justice system ⚖️, she highlighted key reforms such as the Electronic Monitoring Act, increased investment in the digitalisation of court systems, and the establishment of more specialised courts.

The Ambassador also reiterated Malta’s strong commitment to multilateralism, highlighting initiatives such as the establishment of the Global Centre for Maritime Sanctions Monitoring in Malta in collaboration with UNODC, as well as the opening for signature of the Valletta Protocol on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters aimed at strengthening security, justice, and international cooperation 🌍.

Malta remains steadfast in its commitment to the Commission and to its essential work, and looks forward to continuing to contribute constructively to its important efforts. 🤝

🇲🇹🤝🏳️‍🌈 Ahead of hosting the Reception for Vienna Pride, Malta participated in the Vienna Pride Conference, where Ms. Luana Camilleri from the Office of the Prime Minister highlighted Malta’s continued progress in advancing LGBTIQ+ rights and equality.

⚖️ She showcased Malta’s strong track record in LGBTIQ+ legal and policy development, built on comprehensive reforms that have established one of Europe’s most robust frameworks for the protection of LGBTIQ+ rights. She also underlined that real progress depends on sustained institutional commitment and effective cross-sector collaboration to ensure equality is not only achieved, but upheld in practice.

🌈 Looking ahead, Ms. Camilleri outlined Malta’s continued efforts to deepen inclusion and respond to emerging challenges affecting the LGBTIQ+ community.

The Embassy is proud to advance Malta’s active role in international dialogue on equality, diversity, and inclusion, and to help strengthen platforms where these shared commitments are translated into meaningful exchange.

Last Friday, the Embassy of Malta 🇲🇹 in Austria 🇦🇹 had the honour of hosting a reception at the Vienna City Hall to mark the beginning of , together with the Visit Malta AT - Malta Tourism Authority and the Vienna Pride organisers. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, institutional partners, and civil society representatives in a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and human dignity. 🏳️‍🌈

In her opening remarks, H.E. Dr Francesca Camilleri Vettiger, Ambassador of Malta to Austria, reflected on the importance of safeguarding equality, diversity, and inclusion at a time when these values are increasingly being challenged across the world. She recalled that Pride was born from courage and resilience, emphasizing that diversity is not a threat to society but rather its reality, its richness, and one of its greatest strengths. ✨

The Ambassador underlined that this year’s celebrations carry particular significance in Vienna as the city marks the 30th anniversary of the Rainbow Parade, representing three decades of visibility, solidarity, and progress in the pursuit of equal rights and dignity for all. 🌈

Guests were invited to experience a taste of Malta through a selection of Maltese wines and traditional Maltese desserts, showcasing an important aspect of Malta’s rich cultural heritage and hospitality.

🤝 This event was made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the Malta Tourism Authority, with additional kind sponsorship provided by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority. Earlier today, H.E. Dr Francesca Camilleri Vettiger, Ambassador of Malta to Austria and Permanent Representative to all International Organizations in Vienna, 🇲🇹 met with Ms Sirpa Rautio, Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in Vienna. 🇪🇺

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the important mandate of the Agency in promoting and protecting fundamental rights across the European Union.

The Ambassador highlighted Malta’s continued support for the Agency’s valuable work and discussed potential areas of further cooperation to continue protecting and advancing equality, inclusion, and fundamental human rights, including in the context of the upcoming Vienna Pride celebrations starting this Friday 29th May. 🌈

We remain committed to supporting initiatives that protect fundamental rights, embrace diversity, and uphold human dignity, and look forward to further strengthening our cooperation with the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights.
