🌊 This past week, ICPDR Contracting Parties and Observers met in Uzhhorod, Ukraine (and online) for the 24th ICPDR Standing Working Group Meeting, held in a hybrid format with delegations on-site and joining online from across the basin.

ICPDR President Mariia Shpanchyk welcomed everyone, thanking those who travelled to Ukraine as "a powerful testament of solidarity," and reaffirmed Ukraine's Presidency priorities: tackling climate change impacts on the basin, assessing the war's impact on the Lower Danube and Danube Delta, and supporting the Danube River Basin Management Plan through regional cooperation.

Delegations also discussed progress on the JDS5 survey results, a streamlined new structure for the 2027 Danube River Basin Management Plan, and updates on flood protection, pollution management, and more.

A particularly moving moment was the Caritas Ukraine photo exhibition "Water in the Fire of War," showing both the toll of the war on Ukraine's water infrastructure and the resilience of communities working to secure clean water.

🌍 ARSO Open Day 2026 – Slovenia’s Danube Day Already Came and Went!

While many ICPDR countries are still gearing up for Danube Day, Slovenia already had its celebration—and there’s a reason for the timing. With Sava Day falling on June 1st each year, Slovenia’s Danube Day festivities happen a bit earlier in the calendar. And it makes sense: Since most of Slovenia drains into the Danube River Basin, protecting this vital river system matters deeply to Slovenia and to everyone downstream too.

The Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) held an Open Day that doubled as our Danube Day celebration. It was a chance to show visitors what the work actually looks like: the day-to-day reality of monitoring and protecting the rivers that flow through our country.

More than 60 people came through and got a real sense of what the team does:

💧 Tracking river levels and spotting flood and drought risks
🌦️ Building weather forecasts
🔬 Analyzing water samples
🌱 Sampling soils

Guests went on guided tours, asked questions, and got to see firsthand the expertise behind ARSO’s work. It’s always rewarding when people realize that environmental monitoring isn’t just abstract data; it’s about understanding and protecting the landscapes we all depend on.

Thanks to everyone who joined, enjoy the ICPDR tote bags!

🌊 From alpine streams to leading Europe's largest river commission:
What sparked Birgit Vogel's passion for protecting our rivers?
A childhood spent in small alpine streams near Salzburg and one transformative lecture that changed everything.

An in-depth conversation with ICPDR Executive Secretary Birgit Vogel about her journey from small alpine streams to heading one of Europe's most important river commissions.
In this episode, Birgit opens up about:
✨ How growing up near water shaped her life's mission
✨ The career-changing moment that led her to river ecology
✨ The reality of plastic pollution in the Danube today
✨ Why cooperation across 14 countries is the only way forward

The Aquatic Plastic project brings together 33 organisations from 10 countries to prevent and reduce plastic pollution in the Danube River Basin, and Birgit is at the heart of it.

🌍 Today, on World Environment Day, we are reminded that rivers are at the heart of it all! 🌊

World Environment Day reminds us that a healthy environment starts with the basics: clean water, thriving rivers, and intact ecosystems. For the Danube River Basin, this means not only restoring wetlands and reducing pollution but also collaborating across 14 countries to protect our rivers as a unified system. Every sample taken, every stretch of floodplain restored, and every piece of plastic kept out of the river contributes to a healthier environment. This collective effort benefits nature, enhances climate resilience, and supports the 79 million people who call the basin home.

👉 This World Environment Day, let’s be even better Keepers of the Danube. Please take a moment to think about your river and what you can do to protect it.

📘 JDS decoded: What is Impoundment?

An impoundment is a stretch of the river where the flow is slowed by a dam or weir. Along the Danube, these are often run‑of‑river weirs or low‑head dams. They don’t create large, lake‑like reservoirs, but they slow the water, reduce flow velocity, and change how the river behaves. This can affect sediment movement and transport, habitats, and how well the river stays connected to its floodplain.

Why do I need to know about this ❓
Many Danube sections are influenced by these backwater effects. In JDS5, impoundment is assessed as a hydromorphological parameter, helping us understand how altered flow and physical conditions affect habitats and aquatic life.

Why does it matter to me ❓
While impoundments can support navigation, hydropower, or water supply, they also interrupt fish migration, trap sediment, and reduce natural habitat diversity. Knowing how these changes shape the river helps balance ecological needs with human use.

Thank you Daniela Csar for your input on this JDS decoded post 👉 Follow along as we unpack more key terms from the Joint Danube Survey!
