In today’s EU Statement on Nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine, Ireland, on behalf of the EU, urged Russia to comply with all UN General Assembly, IAEA General Conference and Board of Governors’ resolutions on Ukraine.

We stressed that Russia bears full responsibility for the nuclear safety and security risks it is causing as a result of its war of aggression against Ukraine.

Later in the afternoon Ireland spoke on behalf of the EU and its Member States at the IAEA Board of Governors on the item covering NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In the statement, the EU reiterates its full support to the IAEA and to IAEA Director General, Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, in their critical work to uphold the implementation of safeguards, nuclear safety and security in Iran and to pursue clarity on Iran’s nuclear programme. The EU urges Iran to facilitate the full and effective implementation of verification activities by the Agency and to engage with
the Agency in clarifying, without any further delay, the unresolved safeguards issues in accordance with its NPT Safeguards Agreement

The EU supported the E3/US resolution, which was approved by the Board of Governors, referring Iran’s non-compliance to the UN Security Council, in accordance with IAEA Statute.

On this historic day, Ireland, as Presidency of the European Council, delivered the EU Statement in support of IAEA cooperation and the resolution on the Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic, as introduced by the Arab Group. The resolution was adopted by consensus by the IAEA Board of Governors 🇮🇪🇪🇺🇸🇾

The EU reaffirms its full support for the Agency's work on nuclear safety, security & safeguards, & for a multilateral non-proliferation system.

As Ireland holds the Presidency of the European Council, we will be speaking on behalf of EU at all the Board of Governors meetings this week.
