Awdah Hathaleen, beloved friend, teacher, activist, father and husband, was murdered by an Israeli settler on July 28th, 2025 in the village Umm El Khair, Messafer Yatta, Palestine.

Awdah's family and the community of Umm El Khair invite people from around the world to mourn alongside them. As Awdah's friends in Vienna, we invite you to join the memorial event that we will hold here.

Alongside a short film about Awdah and personal stories about him, we will underscore how his biography fits in the larger story of the struggle for Palestinian liberation. We will also demonstrate how the tragedy of his death and the intensified effort to erase his village have been enabled by the cover of the genocide in Gaza.

But if you don’t have time or other resources to bring anything, we’ll still have enough to nourish all of us in many different ways ❤️

The “Fraye Arbeter Shtime” was one of the longest-running anarchist newspapers ever. From 1890 until it shut down in 1977, it was a central place for Yiddish political emancipation and poetry, and an important organ for the Yiddish labor struggle in North America. Read by over 20,000 people at its peak, the “Shtime” wasn’t just a publication; it was an integral part of the Yiddish working-class community.

In this 1980 documentary “Free Voice of Labor: The Jewish Anarchists,” historian Paul Avrich talked to the last contributors to and subscribers of the “Shtime” about the history of the newspaper.

Following the documentary, there will be a brief discussion of contemporary Jewish anarchist print culture.
