Rhythms of Matter continues with an open talk by OFFICE cofounders, Kersten Geers and David Van Severen.

Founded in Brussels in 2002, OFFICE KGDVS has developed one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary European architecture. Working across scales and typologies, from furniture to urban design, the practice understands architecture as a cultural undertaking aimed at improving the human environment. Its work engages pressing questions of sustainability, responsible sourcing, and future use not as limitations, but as catalysts for shaping the urban and social realm.

At once pragmatic and innovative, OFFICE’s projects are deeply rooted in architectural history while remaining sharply engaged with the present. Rather than treating architecture as image-making, their work creates clear spatial frameworks within which life can unfold in all its complexity. Moving between built projects, exhibitions, research, books, and teaching, the studio continuously explores the relationship between architecture, theory, and the contemporary condition.

At Tulla – Culture Center, the evening will move through projects and reflections on architecture as both a cultural discipline and a precise spatial practice—one capable of framing collective life through clarity, order, and restraint.

Rhythms of Matter - 13th Session - Beat Huesler

An evening exploring materiality, the senses of design, and the spirit of place with Beat Huesler, Managing Director of Oppenheim Architecture, at .

Drawing from projects across Switzerland, the Middle East, and Albania, Huesler spoke of architecture as something grounded not only in ideas, but in feeling, material, and sensory experience. Design, in this sense, is not purely theoretical nor just form following function, but shaped through intuition, craft, and a careful reading of context, people, and atmosphere.

Throughout the talk, he returned to the importance of understanding place with openness—where the “spirit of place” is not abstract, but something to be felt and translated with care. His work reflects a quiet balance: between building and landscape, presence and restraint—where architecture recedes into nature while sharpening our awareness of it.

Reflecting on Albania, he noted its energy, openness, and risk-taking spirit—qualities that offer real opportunity when met with care and intelligence. His message to young architects: stay curious, stay hungry, and learn by building.

Rhythms of Matter continues with an open talk by architect Beat Huesler, Director of the European Office at Oppenheim Architecture.
Working across studios in Miami, Basel, and Tirana, with projects spanning six continents, Oppenheim Architecture has developed a body of work defined by a deep engagement with place, climate, and material. Their approach is grounded in the belief that architecture should be symbiotic with its environment, balancing contextual sensitivity with evocative formal expression.

Guided by core principles such as spirit of place, silent monumentality, and the essential, the studio creates architecture that is both expressive and restrained, rooted in context and shaped through a careful use of material, light, and craft.

From desert landscapes to coastal and urban environments, their work explores how buildings can respond to climate and culture while maintaining a strong and enduring presence.

At Tulla – Culture Center, the evening will move through projects and reflections on architecture as a dialogue between nature, material, and human experience.

DURRËS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS – PHASE I COMPLETED

A heartfelt thank you to all 41 teams who participated in the International Design Competition for the Masterplan of the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University Campus in Durrës.

Beyond the competition itself, your contributions have enriched the evaluation process and brought forward a wide range of perspectives on the future of the campus and its role within this part of Durrës. They also reinforce the importance of open, international approaches to public design initiatives.

We are now ready to announce the 5 shortlisted teams, selected to advance to Phase II of the competition. Congratulations!

Looking ahead:
📅 On June 23, the 5 teams will publicly present their proposals.

The Jury will select the winning proposal for the Durrës Campus masterplan.

All shortlisted teams will receive a prize, and the winning team will be awarded the detailed design contract with the University of Durrës.
