The tricolor flag of Afghanistan (black, red, and green) carries deep historical and symbolic meaning:
A thread on history of 🇦🇫
•Black → Represents Afghanistan’s dark past, oppression, and struggles endured under foreign domination and internal conflict.
•Red → Symbolizes the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence and freedom.
•Green → Stands for hope, prosperity, and the future — as well as Islam, which is central to Afghan identity and culture.
Together, the flag embodies Afghanistan’s journey from suffering, through sacrifice, toward a hopeful future.
1928 – The tricolor (black-red-green) was first introduced by King Amanullah Khan after his trip to Europe, inspired by modern nation-state flags.
In 1930s–1970s – Modified several times with changes in the emblem (royal symbols, wheat, mosque) but retained the tricolor base.
1973 – Republic declared under Daoud Khan → Flag still tricolor but emblem adjusted.
In 1978–1987 – Communist regimes replaced the tricolor with different red-dominant designs, dropping the traditional emblem.
1987 – Najibullah’s regime restored a tricolor version with a new emblem.
1992 – Mujahideen victory → Reverted to Islamic emblems on tricolor.
1996–2001 – Taliban rule replaced it with a plain white flag featuring the Shahada.
2021–present – Taliban again replaced it with a white flag, but the black-red-green tricolor remains the recognized national flag internationally and by most Afghans.
The Age of the tricolor flag is nearly 97 years old (since 1928), though with variations in the emblem. But its importance and meaning have and will never change and this is what matters the most to the people of Afghanistan.
Today is the national flag/ national identity day - the flag that has soaked blood of thousands of Afghans for its dignity and that dignity will never fade!
