The Barjeel Art Foundation is an independent, UAE-based initiative established to manage, preserve and exhibit an extensive collection of Modern and Contemporary Arab Art. The foundation’s guiding principle is to contribute to the intellectual development of the art scene in the Gulf region by building a prominent, publicly accessible art collection in the UAE. Part of this objective involves deve

loping a public platform to foster nuanced dialogue about contemporary art practices in the Arab world. Through in-house exhibitions, international artwork loans, print and online publications and interactive public programmes through collaborations with educational institutions, museums and cultural initiatives the Barjeel Art Foundation strives to become an informative resource for contemporary art from the Arab world and its diaspora, both locally and internationally.

“Too many people theorize and politicize about one’s choice of colours in painting. This is not what I put forward in my works. After having focused my attention on the four elements mentioned in the Genesis: Earth- Fire- Water- Air, I now feel like expressing freely my joy to be alive and at peace. My main interests are the positive achievements of humankind, knowing that everything is related, that death is a proven certitude and that human wisdom has not yet been reached on Earth. “At night, before starting to paint, I would open the window and look into the dark and feel the pulse of Beirut. I'd watch people on the street, and everyone out there became me, the street itself became me. I felt so connected to the city, but was its witness as well. I felt a connection to everything, and felt the violence inflicted on the people and the city on myself. ” - Seta Manoukian, in conversation with Kristine Khouri, Seta Manoukian: Painting in Levitation (2017).

Born in 1945 in Beirut, Lebanon, into a Lebanese-Armenian family, Seta Manoukian began drawing at an early age and studied privately with the renowned Lebanese painter Paul Guiragossian (1926 - 1993) between 1960 and 1962. In 1963, she won first prize in an art competition organized by the Italian Embassy, earning a three-month scholarship to study art in Perugia. She later enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where she remained for four years. After returning to Beirut in the late 1960s, she taught at the Lebanese University and, during the Lebanese Civil War, worked closely with children in underprivileged neighborhoods while maintaining an active painting practice shaped by strong political commitment and solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Works from this period depict fragmented urban scenes of Beirut in vivid colors, reflecting both the vitality and violence of the city. After moving to Los Angeles in 1985, her practice became increasingly introspective, informed by spirituality, meditation, and Buddhist philosophy. In 2005, she was ordained as a Buddhist nun under the name Ani Pema Tsultrim Drolma, and she continues to live and work in Los Angeles.

وُلدت سيتا مانوكيان عام ١٩٤٥ في عائلة لبنانية-أرمنية، وبدأت الرسم في سن مبكرة، كما تلقت دروسًا خاصة على يد بول غيراغوسيان بين عامي ١٩٦٠ و١٩٦٢. في عام ١٩٦٣، فازت بمنحة دراسية لدراسة الفن في إيطاليا، فالتحقت بأكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في روما وأقامت هناك أربع سنوات. بعد عودتها إلى بيروت، درّست في الجامعة اللبنانية وعملت مع الأطفال خلال الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية. وفي عام ١٩٨٥، انتقلت إلى لوس أنجلوس، حيث اتجهت أعمالها نحو التأمل والروحانية والفلسفات الشرقية. وفي عام ٢٠٠٥، رُسمت راهبة بوذية، ولا تزال تعيش وتعمل في لوس أنجلوس.

Eid Mubarak ✨

Through her intimate scenes of family gatherings, Meherzia Ghaddab evokes the warmth, joy, and togetherness at the heart of Eid.

Born in Tunis in 1943, Ghaddab was a self-taught artist who credited her mother, who encouraged her children to draw from photographs, with nurturing her interest in art. This early training shaped a folk-inspired practice rooted in both quotidian and celebratory scenes, through which she honoured Tunisian cultural heritage.

من خلال مشاهد للتجمعات العائلية، تستحضر محرزية غضاب الدفء والفرح وروح التآلف التي تكمن في قلب العيد.
وُلدت محرزية غضاب في تونس عام ١٩٤٣، وكانت فنانة عصامية التعلّم نسبت الفضل في تنمية اهتمامها بالفن إلى والدتها، التي كانت تشجّع أبناءها على الرسم من الصور الفوتوغرافية. وقد شكّلت هذه البدايات المبكرة ممارسة فنية مستلهمة من الفن الشعبي، ارتكزت على مشاهد يومية واحتفالية، احتفت من خلالها بالتراث الثقافي التونسي.

Curator’s Pick: What remains of Arab modernist utopias?

With a selection of works from the Barjeel collection, Editor-in-Chief of Diptyk magazine Meryem Sebti writes:

This selection begins with a question: what remains of Arab modernist utopias?
What endures is neither an intact programme nor mere nostalgia. 
These works bear the imprint of a moment when art was charged with a distinct historical function: to represent the people, to invent new forms, to assert cultural sovereignty, to project a future.
Yet this promise is riddled with contradictions.

With Inji Efflatoun, it encounters political repression; with Madiha Umar, Mohamed Melehi, Farid Belkahia and Shakir Hassan Al Said, it shifts toward the letter, materiality, the sign, the surface.
What persists here is not a coherent utopia, but a change in regime: modernity no longer operates as a declared political or social programme, but through the work of forms themselves.

Join us for the launch of “Resonant Histories: India and the Arab World” — a book co-edited by Puja Vaish ( ), Suheyla Takesh (.takesh ), and Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi ( ), and published by Mapin Publishing ( ) on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition co-organised by the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah ( ); Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation ( ); and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ()Mumbai.

‏A selection of some of the works that will be on view in “Pulse: Masterpieces of the Barjeel Art Foundation” at this year’s special edition of Art Dubai, from 15–17 May 2026 at Madinat Jumeirah.

‏The display celebrates key moments in the history of modern art in the Arab World, bringing together works by Mahmoud Said, Samia Halaby, Etel Adnan, Safeya Binzagr, and others.

‏Produced across the 20th century, the works register the pulse of social, cultural, and political transformations across the region. They map a shifting visual language that unfolds across geographies, materials and approaches, from early forms of self-representation to radical experiments
‏in abstraction.

Join us for a panel discussion, “Observers of Change: Five Decades of Artistic Creativity in the UAE,” taking place on Sunday, May 10th, from 5:00–6:00 pm.

Held as part of our “Observers of Change” exhibition at Etihad Museum, this talk is organised by Dubai Culture and Alserkal Advisory in collaboration with the Barjeel Art Foundation.

Artists Nujoom AlGhanem, Najat Hassan Makki, Ismail Al Rifai, and Khalil Abdulwahid come together in a conversation moderated by Alia AlShamsi.

Together, they will explore the evolution of artistic practices in the UAE and reflect on the transformation of its cultural landscape over five decades of creativity and growth.
