President Bola Tinubu approves life time salary for retired paramilitary officers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a lifetime salary structure for retired senior officers of Nigeria’s paramilitary agencies, in a move aimed at strengthening post-service welfare and addressing long-standing concerns over retirement benefits.

The policy applies to retired Controller/Commandant/Comptroller Generals and Deputy Comptroller Generals across key agencies under the Ministry of Interior, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The development was disclosed in a statement by Alao Babatunde, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Interior, who noted that the decision has been widely welcomed by retired officers.

According to the statement, beneficiaries described the approval as a long-awaited relief following years of advocacy over inadequate retirement packages and delayed entitlements under previous administrations.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by a delegation of retired senior officers to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for addressing their concerns, noting that the new policy is expected to significantly improve the welfare and dignity of senior officers after service.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts by the administration to reform the welfare structure of security and paramilitary personnel, many of whom have raised concerns over post-retirement conditions in recent years.

NewspapersNigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Thursday morningPublished on April 16, 2026

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Nigerian Army has laid to rest the remains of the late Commander, 29 Joint Taskforce Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other soldiers killed in recent insurgents attacks in Borno State. This comes as troops of the 115 Task Force Battalion repelled a fresh attack by suspected terrorists on Wednesday.

2. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress may emerge through the consensus option. This is just as he stated that the 2027 presidential election will mark the final chapter of his long political career, stating unequivocally that he will not seek office beyond the next election cycle.

3. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Wednesday announced the arrest of 14 suspected members of a car theft and robbery syndicate, as well as the recovery of 17 stolen vehicles across Abuja. Addressing journalists at the command headquarters, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the arrests followed intensified intelligence-led operations conducted from March 2026 to date.

4. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected claims that it is responsible for the internal crises rocking opposition parties. During a live media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary, Dr Ajibola Basiru, defended Tinubu, affirming that the ruling party remains resilient, open, and focused on providing effective governance nationwide.

5. Members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards have arrested a commercial driver conveying 98 explosive devices, N13m, and three motorcycles allegedly en route to a bandits’ camp in Bindin village, Maru Local Government Area of the state. Other items recovered from the suspect included cartons of ci******es, suspected Indian h**p, and crates of apples.

7. The Federal Government has ruled out any return of petrol subsidy in Nigeria, despite the recent surge in global oil prices driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, stated this during a media briefing of the G-24 on the sidelines of the launch of the April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

8. Federal Government on Wednesday withdrew the terrorism financing charge it filed against the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abdulaziz. The FG, through its team of lawyers, led by Mr. Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, applied to substitute the charge with an amended one concerning the defendants’ alleged illegal possession of arms and ammunition.

9. The Naira on Wednesday appreciated to N1,393 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,403 per dollar on Tuesday. Similarly, the naira appreciated to N1,341.99 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM.

PoliticsINEC Can Say What They Want, ADC Will Not Listen

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Babachir Lawal, said that the party would be on the ballot in the 2027 elections regardless of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) position.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday, Lawal stated that despite the electoral body’s absence from its recently concluded convention, the exercise remains valid.

According to him, the party acted on the advice of its legal advisers. He described the convention as a “success” despite what he termed efforts by the government to frustrate it.

He said, “We don’t listen to INEC. They are not the Appeal Court, they are not the Supreme Court, not even the High Court. So, INEC can say whatever they want to say. We are going to be on the ballot, whatever INEC says; we are going to participate in this election.

The ADC chieftain also said his party has solutions to Nigeria’s challenges but stressed that its immediate priority is to prevent the APC from continuing in power.

“First thing first, we have the solution, we know we have the solution. The calibre of people we have in that party and the way we are running our democracy in our party is such that we believe we have the solution to the problem. But first thing first, stop this government from continuing with what they have started,” he added.

ADC crisis: Court rejects Mark-led leadership’s request for prompt hearing of Nafiu Balas case

Adjourns indefinitely pending outcome of appeal at Supreme Court
A Federal High Court in Abuja has turned down a request by the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Party (ADC), seeking the hearing of all pending motions, including the substantive case filed by an aggrieved chieftain of the party, Nafiu-Bala Gombe.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on Tuesday, held that he could not proceed to hear the case because doing so when the jurisdiction of his court is being challenged by Mark at the Supreme Court would amount to wrestling jurisdiction with the apex court.

Justice Nwite said that though the facts of the case as stated by both parties were not in dispute, he, however, held that “the facts are glearing that an appeal had been entered” at the apex court.

The judge also cited reliefs two and three in the motion on notice filed by Mark before the Supreme Court where he is seeking an order staying ex*****on of the March 12 judgment of the Appeal Court and voiding the judgment.

The judge said: “It is trite law that where a court lacks jurisdiction to entertain a suit, no matter how beautiful the judgment is delivered, it will be a nullity,” he said.

Justice Nwite also faulted the argument by lawyers to Mark and other defendantsthat since their case at the Supreme Court is an interlocutory appeal, such cannot operate to mean a stay of proceedings before the lower court.

The judge noted that the interlocutory appeal could likely dispense the case before his court, adding that the most honourable thing to do was to await the decision of the Supreme Court,” he added.

He agreed with the lawyer to the plaintiff (Gombe) that it was proper to adjourn indefinitely.

Listed with Mark as defendants in the case, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, are ADC, Rauf Aregbesola, Ralph Nwosu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

APC Rejects Automatic Tickets for N’Assembly Members Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting that its National Assembly members may be granted automatic tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections.Party membership management

The party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, made this known during a media briefing in Abuja, where he addressed growing speculation within political circles.

He stated clearly that the party has no provision for such an arrangement.

“There is no automatic ticket in our constitution. The party cannot promise an automatic ticket,” he said.

Yilwatda explained that both the APC constitution and Nigeria’s electoral laws set clear procedures for selecting candidates. According to him, no individual can bypass these rules, regardless of their current position.

“There’s no automatic ticket in our constitution. The constitution of the party does not provide for automatic tickets, and the party cannot wishfully promise automatic ticket to anyone.Nigeria travel guides

“The Electoral Act also does not provide for automatic ticket. It says all primaries must be either by consensus or by direct primaries,” he added.

He noted that every aspirant, including serving lawmakers, would have to go through the same process when the time comes.

“All members of our party will undergo the same process. We will use the Electoral Act, our party guidelines, and constitution to get people to participate in primaries,” he said.

The APC chairman also pointed out that performance in office would play a key role in determining who gets the support of party members during primaries. He stressed that the party would rely on internal democracy and the judgment of its members.

“The people and party members will judge those who have performed very well,” he said.

Court Strikes Out ADC Leadership Suit, Cites Lack Of Jurisdiction

A High Court sitting in the Dutsin-Ma Judicial Division of Katsina State has struck out a suit challenging the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ruling that the matter falls within the internal affairs of a political party and is therefore outside the court’s jurisdiction.

The judgment, delivered on April 14, 2026, by Justice A.K. Tukur, vacated an earlier ex-parte interim order issued on April 7, 2026, and dismissed the case for want of jurisdiction.

The suit was filed by Alhaji Musa Usman Wamba, who claimed to be the ADC State Chairman in Katsina State, against Lawan Batagarawa, Babangida Ibrahim Mahuta, the ADC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In his ruling, Justice Tukur held that the subject matter relates strictly to intra-party affairs, which courts are generally barred from intervening in, referencing provisions of the Electoral Act. The court consequently struck out the suit and set aside all interim orders previously granted.

The decision reinforces the long-standing judicial principle that disputes over party leadership are internal matters to be resolved within party structures, except where clear breaches of law or party constitution are established.

The development was first made public via a post on X by ADC Vanguard, the party’s mobilisation platform, which described the ruling as an internal party matter. Court filings, however, indicate the dispute was confined to the Katsina State chapter of the ADC and did not directly involve the party’s national leadership.

No official reactions had been received from the parties involved or from INEC at the time of filing this report.
