*Wanezi Dam Ignites Rural Resurgence : A Model for Dam Economy-Driven Transformation*

Today, Permanent Secretary *Professor Dr. Obert Jiri* undertook a strategic tour of the *Wanezi Dam* and its associated irrigation projects in *Insiza District,* Matabeleland South. Implemented by the *Government of Zimbabwe* in collaboration with *UNDP* under the *Climate Adaptation for Water and Energy Programme*(CAWEP), this transformative initiative is a shining example of integrated rural development, with the *dam economy* concept at the centre of it. Boasting a substantial capacity of *1.7 million cubic metres,* Wanezi Dam stands as a vital lifeline for *12,000 people,* offering a multi-dimensional solution to water security and rural livelihoods upliftment.

Central to the project is a *30-hectare centre-pivot* irrigation scheme, empowering *74 households* to sustainably cultivate high-value crops such as sugar beans, chilli, and Michigan pea. Complementing this, CAWEP has established a *piped water scheme* delivering clean, potable water to the wider community.A fisheries component further enriches the dam’s utility, *10,000 fingerlings* were stocked in March 2025 by Deputy Minister *Hon. Davis Marapira,* supporting food security and economic opportunities.

The Permanent Secretary lauded this initiative as a vivid embodiment of the “all-benefitting dam economy” concept, underscoring water’s potential not merely as a resource, but as a *catalyst for rural transformation.* He commended the robust synergy between government and development partners, noting with satisfaction how irrigation, fisheries, water reticulation, and potential energy generation converge to uplift communities and create meaningful employment, especially for youth and women.
