NATIONAL ARCHIVES COMMENCES APPRAISAL OF MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS RECORDS

Lusaka, 10 August 2026
Archivists at the National Archives of Zambia (NAZ) have commenced the appraisal of records from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation covering from 1960 to 1990 as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen records management and ensure the preservation of records with enduring value.

The exercise is being led by Chief Archivist – Records Management, Mr. Sipho Banda, and is aimed at systematically assessing records created and received by the Ministry to determine their continuing administrative, legal, fiscal, evidential and historical value.

Records appraisal is a critical component of the records management lifecycle, as it enables institutions to identify records that warrant permanent preservation while ensuring that those whose retention periods have expired and which no longer possess enduring value are appropriately disposed of in accordance with established procedures and archival standards.

The exercise further demonstrates the National Archives of Zambia’s continued commitment to supporting Government institutions in implementing effective records management programmes and ensuring that records of enduring value are preserved for present and future generations.
