It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the passing of Kaweche Kaunda, the sixth son of our founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda our First Republican president.

Kaweche was not only a son of Zambia’s first family, but he was also a friend,grandfather, father Uncle,and a brother. His humility, warmth, and quiet strength reflected the noble legacy he carried. His departure is a painful reminder of the fragility of life, yet also a call to honour the values he embodied faith, loyalty, and unity.

Hichilema orders urgent action on student sanitation in public universities

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has directed the Ministries of Education, Health, Infrastructure, and Water Development and Sanitation, together with the University of Zambia management, to take immediate action to resolve sanitation challenges affecting students and staff in public universities and colleges across the country.

In a statement, President Hichilema assured the public that poor sanitation in higher learning institutions will not be ignored and that the government is committed to swift, tangible interventions.

Earlier today, the Head of State held an emergency meeting with the relevant ministries and UNZA management, reviewing the state of sanitation facilities and assessing urgent solutions to the problem.

According to State House Communication Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, President Hichilema ordered that the Zambia National Service (ZNS) be mobilised to support the ministries in implementing corrective measures without delay.

He further instructed the Ministry of Education and UNZA management to address long-standing issues affecting lecturers and other academic staff.

“The President has reiterated the importance of education as an investment, equaliser and inheritance deserving of every citizen. He stressed that sanitation is not a secondary matter but that it is central to health, well-being, and basic human dignity," Hamasaka stated.

The emergency directive comes amid rising complaints from UNZA students who took it to the streets last night to protest over poor sanitation at the country's highest institution of learning.

iCOUNCILLOR CHELLO DONATES 70 COFFINS TO EASE FUNERAL BURDEN IN KANYAMA

Residents of Kanyama Ward 13 in Lusaka are set to benefit from a donation of 70 coffins by their area councillor, Leonard Chello, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden associated with funerals.

Hon. Chello said the initiative is intended to support vulnerable families during times of loss, noting that burial expenses remain a major challenge for many households in the community. By providing coffins free of charge, the councillor hopes to offer immediate relief to those who may otherwise struggle to afford dignified burial arrangements.

He has since urged residents in need of assistance to visit his office, where the coffins will be distributed to qualifying individuals within the ward.

The donation forms part of his broader efforts to improve social welfare and respond to the everyday challenges faced by people in Kanyama. Community members have described the gesture as timely, particularly in light of rising living costs that continue to strain household incomes.

The initiative highlights the role of local leadership in addressing grassroots needs and offering practical solutions to support vulnerable populations
