GOOD MORNING ABENA LUANSHYA! 🇿🇲

Yesterday, I was privileged to officiate at the 5th Graduation Ceremony of Luanshya Skills Training Centre.

I congratulated all the graduands for successfully completing their various skills training programmes and encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship rather than simply wait for employment.

“Do not expect to be employed; use the skills you have acquired to create employment and become employers.”

The skills you have acquired are a powerful tool for transforming your lives, supporting your families and contributing to the development of our communities.

I therefore encouraged the graduands to put these skills to work and create opportunities not only for themselves, but for others as well.

I also took time to appreciate and thank the parents and guardians for investing in the education and skills development of their children. Your support and sacrifice have played an important role in making this achievement possible.

As Government, we are equally committed to investing in our young people by providing opportunities for them to acquire practical skills that can enable them to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

Congratulations once again to all the graduands. Your journey does not end with graduation — this is where the real work begins. Go out there, create opportunities and become employers.

*FACT-FINDING VISITS TO CHITWI AND KAFUBU BLOCK DEPOTS*

Yesterday, I made prompt visits to Chitwi and Kafubu Block depots following calls and concerns I had been receiving from members of the community regarding allegations of corruption involving officers.

The visits were a fact-finding mission to establish the situation on the ground. After visiting the sites and assessing the operations, I found that the allegations were false alarms.

The government is pleased with the response from farmers in Luanshya District. We have recorded a bumper harvest, and farmers have responded very well to the Government’s maize purchasing programme.

However, I have urged farmers and cooperatives to immediately take steps to secure the maize that is currently at the depots. Rain is unpredictable, and we cannot afford to lose the produce after such a good harvest.

I have therefore advised farmers to immediately request for tarpaulins to cover and protect the maize stocks in case of rainfall.

Let us work together to safeguard the maize and ensure that our farmers benefit from their hard work.

K15.8 MILLION MAIZE PURCHASES BOOST LUANSHYA ECONOMY

The Food Reserve Agency has injected about 15.8 million kwacha into the Luanshya local economy through maize purchases.

Luanshya District Commissioner Paul Malele says the FRA has so far bought 45,863 X 50-kilogramme bags of maize.

Mr Malele says 1,172 farmers have supplied maize, with 1,102 already paid.

He has assured farmers awaiting payment to remain calm, saying government is adhering to the directive to pay farmers within three days of maize delivery.

Meanwhile, farmers have started redeeming farming inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme, FISP.

Mr Malele says 50 farmers have so far redeemed seed inputs after receiving the required codes.

He says the 15.8 million kwacha paid to farmers is now circulating within Luanshya, helping to stimulate local economic activity.

LUANSHYA’S GANDHI PRIMARY SCHOOL ALUMNI, HINDUS DONATE FEEDING SHELTER, BASKETBALL COURT

A GROUP of United States (US) based Old Boys and Old Girls from Luanshya’s Gandhi Primary School under the umbrella of NANU Foundation have teamed up with the local Hindu society and raised money to construct a feeding shelter and a basketball court worth over Seven Hundred Thousand Kwacha (K700, 000-00) at their former school.

And Luanshya District Commissioner (D.C) Paul Malele, who commissioned the newly constructed Gandhi Primary School Feeding Shelter , said the donation will go a long way in helping the school and Luanshya not only prepared to excel but ready to face and as powerful tool for solving social and economic problems.

Presenting the donation on behalf of the of the NANU Foundation, Luanshya Hindu Society Chairman and Gourock Zambia Limited Director Sharad Desai, said a network of US based Gandhi alumni, other former Luanshya and Copperbelt born professionals now based in America’s state of Taxes, have teamed up with the Luanshya Hindu Society to support the advancement of the Government policy of free education.

Mr Desai said the thirty members of the Luanshya Hindu Society, who are Zambians of Asian descent born and bred in Luanshya and also former pupils at Gandhi Primary have over the years been supporting infrastructure development at their former school.

He explained that they decided to support the construction of the feeding hall and basketball court because feeding and engaging in sport help the learners to be active- focusing on learning concentration once they are well fed and participating in sport and other extra-curricular activities help the learners to be active participants in the learning process respectively.

Speaking during the Commissioning of the Feeding Hall, Mr Malele said Government places high premium of education.

He said over 2.5 million new learners have enrolled in public schools country wide over the past five years after the reintroduction of the free-education policy.

Mr Malele said Government has introduced the school feeding and school health policy as some of the measures aimed at maximising the benefits of free education among all Zambians.He said feeding enhances children concentration in school and the benefit of well managing the program in the district were many.

He disclosed that Luanshya was last year the Best Performing District in the Copperbelt at junior secondary school level as seen from the latest high passing rate in the grade Nine examination results,which were released this year.

“It has been observed that with the introduction of the feeding program children are now not now going school, but they stay in school. This Government initiative hasalso removed the burden of providing daily lunch money for the learners by parents,” Mr Malele said.

Last year the Government introduced the national wide school feeding program as one of the ways of mich previously experienced high levels of absenteeism due to insufficient food rations in homes.

The DC appealed to schools authorities to “religiously” guard the food which the Government was buying for all schools and further warned the teachers to desist from sharing beans meant for the learners.

He thanked the Luanshya Hindu Society for their relentless community service and continuous support to Gandhi Primary School which has facilitated not only the construction of a Feeding Hall but also the construction of Basketball Courts which has been extended to Luanshya Boys Secondary School.

Gandhi Primary School headmaster Malambo-Prudence- Chilwalo and Pupils Representative Malumbo Zumani, thanked the Hindu Society and NUNA Foundation for boosting the learning environment at their schools meets necessary standardsto produce the best results.

Luanshya Town Clerk Collins Ndilema , heads of government departments and other state holders also attended the commissioning of the Feeding Hall the first of its kind among Government owned primarybschoolsmin in the disrtrict.

Luanshya’s Asoka Primary school was established in the early part of the 20 century, following the discovery of copper deposit a by prospector William Collier. The school was for many years called Asoka Primary School for Asians and later changed its name to Gandhi Primary School after Zambia became independent in 1964.

Yesterday, as we commemorated International Women’s Day in Luanshya, I reflected on the important role women continue to play in shaping our families, communities and the nation. The day served as a reminder that we must strengthen our efforts in promoting women’s rights and ending gender-based violence.

As a district, we must remain committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where women and girls can live free from violence, discrimination and exclusion. Meaningful development can only be achieved when women are fully included in leadership and decision-making processes.

I am encouraged by the continued commitment of government under the vision of His excellence President of the republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, particularly through reforms such as the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 2025, which aim to increase participation of women, youths and persons with disabilities in governance.

Women in Luanshya continue to contribute greatly to social and economic development as farmers, entrepreneurs, miners, teachers and health workers, despite facing challenges such as limited access to resources and leadership opportunities.

As we move forward, I urge communities, faith-based organisations, the private sector, and men and boys to work together in promoting gender equality. Empowering women strengthens families, communities and the nation.
