Spain another viable destination for South Africans to retire

The Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) presents an attractive opportunity for non-EU citizens seeking to reside in Spain without engaging in any professional activities, thereby making it an ideal choice for retirees. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves and their dependents without relying on the Spanish social welfare system. This visa is specifically tailored for retirees with stable income or savings, serving as a pathway to long-term residency in Spain, with the potential to lead to permanent residency following five years of continuous legal residence. The minimum financial requirements include an annual income of EUR 28,800 (R571,000) for the primary applicant and an additional EUR 7,200 (R143,000) for each dependent.

Thailand is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for South African retirees due to its low cost of living. The country's rich cultural heritage offers retirees the opportunity to immerse themselves in ancient temples, traditional festivals, and authentic street food as a lifestyle, rather than merely as a tourist experience. Furthermore, retirees can benefit from world-class healthcare facilities and highly qualified medical professionals, particularly in major cities such as Bangkok and Phuket. To facilitate extended stays, Thailand has introduced a specific retirement visa, known as the "Non-Immigrant Visa O-A" (Long Stay), designed for individuals over 50 who wish to reside in the kingdom. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a monthly income of THB 65,000 (R32,000) or maintain a Thai bank deposit of THB 800,000 (R434,000) for at least two months prior to applying. Portugal has become a sought-after retirement destination for South African citizens due to its affordable cost of living and high-quality universal healthcare system. This system ensures that all residents receive necessary healthcare services, regardless of income or employment status. For retirees, Portugal offers the D7 Visa, designed for individuals with passive income or pensions. This visa requires proof of a stable income, such as from pensions, rental properties, investments, or remote work, without necessitating a property purchase. The minimum monthly income requirement is set at EUR 760 (approximately R15 000), allowing retirees to enjoy their savings while benefiting from Portugal’s relatively low cost of living compared to other European countries. A few retirement destinations for South Africans. More posts will follow on some more viable options.

Mauritius presents an attractive and affordable retirement destination for South Africans. The country provides a renewable 10-year retirement visa, requiring a monthly income of USD 1,500 (approximately R27,500) deposited into a local bank account. The source of income can vary, provided it is legal, and sustainability is key. Notably, there are no obligations to invest in government schemes or purchase property. Retiring on a tropical island is a dream for many, and Mauritius makes it a viable possibility.

Positive news for South Africa’s economy as Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber gazettes significant visa reforms for South Africa.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber just announced the launch of a Remote Work Visitor Visa and a new points-based system for work visas.

This means easier hiring for South African and multinational companies and a significant shift in South Africa’s immigration framework.

The Remote Work Visa is designed for well-paid professionals working for foreign companies, allowing them to reside in South Africa for up to 3 years without competing in the local job market. Their foreign income boosts our economy via VAT and local spending. 💼💵

The Points-Based System for issuing Critical Skills and General Work Visas introduces a transparent process based on occupation, qualifications, salary, work experience, employment status, and language skills. 🏆📊

Leon Schreiber calls it "the single most progressive and pro-jobs regulatory reform South Africa has seen in decades."

Applications outside the trusted employer scheme will require a threshold of over R650,796 in gross annual income to protect local jobs.

This reform clears administrative hurdles, protecting local jobs and speeding up the visa process for skilled workers.

Do you think these refinements will make things easier? Let me hear your thoughts below in the comments!
