Today, young people from across all six municipalities of Amathole District gathered at the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature for a Youth Parliament Preparatory Workshop ahead of the upcoming Youth Parliament scheduled for 25 June 2026.

The workshop provided a platform for young people to engage meaningfully on critical issues affecting youth development and social transformation. Discussions were centred around the following thematic areas:

1. Youth Economic Empowerment and Inclusive Development: Advancing the Socio-Economic Rights of Young People
2. Building a Conscientised Youth Movement Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and Social Ills, taking into account:
30 Years of the Constitution of South Africa;
The 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising

The engagements were robust, insightful, and solution-driven, reflecting the determination of young people to shape a better future for themselves and their communities. Participants shared experiences, proposed practical interventions, and strengthened their understanding of the role of youth in advancing social justice, economic transformation, equality, and human dignity.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the officials and stakeholders who guided and enriched the discussions, including:
Hon. Gunuza, who chaired the session;
Ms Zatu, who facilitated engagement processes;
Ms Hermanus, who outlined the House Rules and parliamentary procedures;
SPU officials from various local municipalities across the district; and
Ms Ayanda, who delivered an informative presentation on economic opportunities and youth development.

As SAYC Amathole, we remain
committed to ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and represented in decision-making spaces. We are confident that the contributions made during today's workshop will strengthen Amathole's participation in the upcoming Youth Parliament.

Today, the youth of Amathole proudly participated in the Integrated Youth Development Strategy and Provincial Youth Development Strategy Consultation Process hosted by the National Youth Development Agency together with the Office of the Premier Eastern Cape and various youth development stakeholders across the province.
The consultation created an important platform for young people from different regions of the Eastern Cape to engage meaningfully on issues affecting the youth and shaping the future of youth development in our province.
As South African Youth Council, we are proud of the young leaders from Amathole who contributed immensely across the key pillars of discussion:
• Education and Youth Cohesion
• Economic Transformation and Job Creation
• Mental Health and Physical Health Promotion
• Social Cohesion and Nation Building
• Effective and Responsive Youth Development Machinery

The participation of young people in these discussions demonstrates the importance of youth voices in policy development and decision-making processes. Young people are not only beneficiaries of development but active drivers of change, innovation, and community transformation.

We further appreciate the presence and contributions of other regions across the province, whose collective input strengthened the consultation process and reflected the spirit of unity, collaboration, and youth-led development.

Together, we continue to advocate for inclusive policies, sustainable opportunities, and a responsive youth development agenda that addresses the real challenges facing young people in the Eastern Cape and South Africa at large.
