: What makes a garden therapeutic?

Ever wonder what separates a relaxing afternoon in the backyard from a structured Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) session?

While traditional gardening often focuses heavily on crop yields or landscape aesthetics, therapeutic horticulture focuses entirely on the human participant. In TH, a registered practitioner uses intentional tasks involving plants, gardening, or nature interaction to achieve specific, measurable wellness goals. It shifts the paradigm from simply ""growing plants"" to ""using plants to grow people"".

🧱 The Building Block: Now that we’ve defined what TH is, next week we will explore the very first tool practitioners use to stimulate well-being: the human senses.

💬 Let’s Connect: Think about your own relationship with nature. How has interacting with plants supported your mental clarity or stress relief this week? Let us know below!

Your kitchen scraps can do far more than fill a bin — they can help build healthy, living soil. 🌱

This May, we’re encouraging more people to turn everyday food waste into something meaningful: richer soil, thriving gardens, and healthier food grown closer to home.

Here’s how the bokashi cycle works:
🥕 Save your food scraps instead of sending them to landfill
🪣 Add bokashi bran to a sealed bucket and let beneficial microbes do the work
🌍 Turn fermented scraps into nutrient-rich organic matter for your soil
🍅 Grow stronger plants and more resilient gardens naturally

It’s a simple habit with a lasting impact — one bucket, one daily action, one step closer to a healthier planet.

Want to get started? DM me to get your bokashi bran and bucket. 🌿

Bees are some of nature’s smallest workers with one of the biggest impacts. Without healthy pollinators, we would lose much of the food, biodiversity, and natural balance that supports both people and planet. Every garden planted with care becomes part of protecting these essential ecosystems.

At Ukwandagro, we believe growing healthy soil, diverse gardens, and connected communities all work together to create a healthier future for people and the environment.

This World Bee Day, plant something that feeds the bees — and in turn, helps feed the world.

Healthy soil grows healthy people. 🌱

When we fill a raised bed, we are not just adding “dirt” — we are creating a living ecosystem that will nourish plants, communities, and ultimately ourselves.

Healthy soil is alive with billions of microorganisms, fungi, insects, and earthworms working together beneath the surface. These unseen allies break down organic matter, cycle nutrients, improve water retention, strengthen plant health, and build resilience from the ground up.

The richer the soil life, the healthier the harvest.

That’s why the foundation of every thriving raised bed starts with a balanced growing medium:
• 50% quality topsoil
• 50% nutrient-rich compost

From there, natural amendments like worm castings, leaf mold, biochar, coconut coir, and mycorrhizal fungi can help create soil that breathes, holds moisture, supports biodiversity, and feeds plants naturally.

Good soil is not just about growing vegetables. It’s about restoring connection — to nature, to nourishment, and to wellbeing.

At Ukwandagro, we believe therapeutic horticulture begins from the ground up. When we care for the soil, the soil cares for us in return.

Healthy soil grows healthy plants.
Healthy plants grow healthy people.

Today we celebrate the quiet power of plants, people, and connection.

On World Therapeutic Horticulture Day, we honour the way gardens can become spaces of healing, reflection, growth, and hope. Whether it is planting a seed, feeling soil in your hands, listening to birdsong, or simply pausing to breathe outdoors — nature has a remarkable way of restoring us.

Therapeutic horticulture reminds us that healing does not always happen in big moments. Sometimes it begins slowly, gently, and one season at a time. 💚

At Ukwandagro, we believe healing spaces should be spaces where people feel safe to grow, belong, and be fully themselves.

Gardens teach us that diversity is not something to fear — it is what creates resilience, balance, and beauty.

On International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, we stand for compassion, dignity, inclusion, and the right for every person to exist without fear.

Therapeutic horticulture is ultimately about connection: to self, to community, and to the natural world. 🌱
