Good morning, residents.
I am sharing the attached joint statement issued by national and provincial government, Rand Water, the City of Johannesburg and the relevant entities regarding the ongoing water-supply difficulties. It is quite an extensive document, so the important points for us are:
- The recent interruptions were caused by power failures affecting Rand Water's Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant and Eikenhof Booster Pumping Station. Eikenhof supplies, among other areas, Roodepoort.
- Although the electrical faults were repaired within hours, water systems do not recover nearly as quickly. Rand Water says it takes approximately six hours just to restart its systems fully, after which reservoirs still need to recover.
- Importantly, where municipal reservoirs have been significantly depleted, recovery can take considerably longer โ potentially weeks in some circumstances, particularly while demand remains high. Reservoir levels are therefore still recovering in some areas.
- A number of interventions have now been agreed to strengthen and provide backup electricity supply to this critical water infrastructure, including upgrades at Eikenhof and additional redundancy measures.
- Authorities have also acknowledged the need for water tankers in areas where municipal systems have still not recovered, together with better communication to affected communities.
In short: pumping may have resumed, but that unfortunately does not mean every household immediately receives water. Parts of the system remain in recovery, which explains why some communities are still experiencing no water or very low pressure.
I know that this has already gone on far too long for residents who remain without supply. I will continue sharing relevant information as it becomes available and raising areas where alternative water provision is required.
