The initiative aimed to provide comfort and dignity to patients undergoing cancer treatment while reminding them that they are not alone in their journey. Each donated scarf symbolized care, encouragement, and solidarity with those bravely fighting cancer.

Child Protection Week Commemoration and Awareness March | 29 May – 5 June 2026

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital proudly commemorated Child Protection Week 2026 through an awareness march and advocacy programme held under the theme, “Working Together to End Violence Against Children.” This important national campaign serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold and protect the rights, dignity, safety, and well-being of every child. The commemoration provided an opportunity to raise awareness about the prevention of child abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence, while promoting a culture of care, protection, and accountability.

The event brought together a multidisciplinary team comprising the Teddy Bear Clinic, Social Work Department, Occupational Therapy Department, Speech Therapy Department, Physiotherapy Department, Dietetics Department, Wits Dental Clinic, Paediatric Department, Radiography Department, the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), Childline South Africa, SAPS, and other valued stakeholders. Through a united show of support and commitment, participants engaged patients, staff, caregivers, and members of the public on the importance of safeguarding children and creating environments where they can grow, develop, and thrive free from harm.

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital extends its sincere appreciation to all departments, partners, and stakeholders who contributed to the success of this meaningful commemoration. Special thanks are extended to NCJJ Projects for their generous support through the provision of graphic design services, awareness posters, and balloons, which significantly enhanced the visibility of the campaign. As we continue to observe Child Protection Week 2026, our Social Work Department remains committed to raising awareness about the rights, safety, and well-being of every child.

Child protection is a collective responsibility. By working together as families, communities, educators, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders, we can create safe and nurturing environments where children are protected from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence.

This year’s Child Protection Week reminds us that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, caring, and supportive environment that enables them to reach their full potential.

If you suspect that a child is at risk, speak up and report it. Protecting children starts with all of us.
