🗳️ HOW WARD 88 CAN HELP CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT OF JOHANNESBURG

Many people don’t realise that in the municipal election, both of your votes matter.

When you vote, you receive two ballot papers:

🔹 Ward ballot – You vote for your local ward councillor.

🔹 PR (Proportional Representation) ballot – You vote for the political party you want to govern Johannesburg.

The candidate who receives the most votes on the ward ballot becomes the ward councillor and takes one seat in Council.

But your vote doesn’t stop there.

The IEC then combines all the votes cast for political parties on both the ward and PR ballots across Johannesburg. Those votes are used to calculate how many seats each party receives in Council.

The ward seats already won are taken into account, and PR seats are allocated so that each party’s total number of councillors is as close as possible to its overall share of the vote.

📊 What could Ward 88 contribute?

Ward 88 has approximately 20,000 registered voters.

For this example, let’s assume:

✅ All 20,000 registered voters turn out.
✅ 80% vote DA on the ward ballot.
✅ The same 80% vote DA on the PR ballot.

That would give the DA:

🔹 16,000 ward votes
🔹 16,000 PR votes

Total: 32,000 votes towards the DA’s citywide proportional representation.

Using the 2021 Johannesburg election’s approximate seat quota of about 6,800 combined votes per Council seat, those votes would be worth approximately 4.7 Council seats’ worth of votes.

In practical terms, Ward 88 could contribute approximately:

🔹 One DA ward councillor, and

🔹 Enough additional votes to help elect approximately three to four more DA councillors citywide.

This does not mean those councillors belong only to Ward 88. PR seats are allocated across Johannesburg based on the final citywide result. It simply shows how much influence our ward can have when we vote together.

The final outcome will depend on:

• Voter turnout in Ward 88
• Whether residents vote DA on both ballots
• The total number of valid votes cast across Johannesburg
• The final IEC seat quota
• The allocation of remaining seats and vote remainders

If turnout drops to 60%, the impact is significantly smaller. That’s why every single vote matters.

The message is simple:

🗳️ Your first vote protects your ward.

🗳️ Your second vote helps determine who governs Johannesburg.

A strong Ward 88 can do far more than elect one councillor. Together, we can help bring additional DA councillors into Council and change the balance of power in Johannesburg.

WARD 88 RESIDENTS – PLEASE CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION

Residents,

A media statement issued by the MMC for Transport has confirmed that the City of Johannesburg’s financial crisis has now reached a point where Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) refuelling services have been suspended, resulting in severe impacts on service delivery across the city.

According to the statement, this means:
• Pothole repairs are halted.
• Traffic signal maintenance is affected.
• Emergency stormwater and road hazard responses are impacted.
• Bridge and infrastructure inspections are delayed.
• Turnaround times for road-related infrastructure issues are expected to increase significantly.

Whether you agree with the current administration or not, this is a stark reminder that local government matters. The decisions made at the city level directly affect the roads we drive on, the infrastructure we rely on, and the services we receive every day.

As a Johannesburg resident, I often hear people say that voting doesn’t make a difference.

The truth is that it does.

Just look at the difference in municipal tariff increases across South Africa’s major cities. While Johannesburg residents are facing significant increases in the cost of basic services, Cape Town continues to keep increases substantially lower while maintaining some of the best municipal services in the country.

Good governance has consequences. So does bad governance.

The 2026 Local Government Election will determine who controls your municipality, your rates account, your water bill, your electricity bill, your roads, your parks and your local services for the next five years.

But before you can vote, you need to make sure you are registered correctly.

Many residents have moved since the last election, and ward boundaries have changed in several areas. If your registration details are incorrect, your vote may not count where you live.

No deal yet between Eskom and the City of Johannesburg

Despite two rounds of negotiations between Eskom, City Power and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, no agreement has yet been reached regarding Johannesburg’s outstanding electricity debt. Eskom’s threat to interrupt the City’s electricity supply therefore remains on the table.

The City reportedly owes Eskom R5.2 billion in historical debt, with a further R2 billion outstanding on its current account. Eskom’s public participation process, required before any reduction or interruption of bulk supply, is still ongoing.

Residents should understand that while discussions are continuing, the matter has not been resolved. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact any supply interruption could have on public safety, communications, businesses and essential services across Johannesburg.

This situation highlights the importance of getting Johannesburg’s finances back on track and ensuring that service delivery entities are managed responsibly and sustainably.

National Treasury has effectively admitted that it cannot keep rescuing failing municipalities. Debt write-offs, payment plans and withholding grants may buy time, but they do not fix poor governance, weak revenue collection or failing infrastructure.

The warning is clear: municipalities must become financially sustainable or residents will continue paying more while receiving less.

Johannesburg’s ward boundaries have changed ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Even if you have voted before, it is important to check that:
• You are registered to vote
• Your address is correct
• You are registered in the correct ward and voting district

It only takes a few minutes and can save a lot of frustration on election day.

Residents of Ward 88

Please note that Johannesburg’s ward boundaries are changing ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, and Ward 88 will now include additional areas and residents as part of the new demarcation process.

This means many residents may no longer be registered in the correct ward or at the correct voting station — even if you have voted there for years.

If you are tired of:

• prolonged power outages,
• collapsing infrastructure,
• potholes left for months,
• water leaks running endlessly,
and a city that keeps making excuses while residents suffer,

then the reality is simple: things will not change unless residents vote for change on 4 November 2026.

Residents can choose whichever option is easiest for them to check their registration details:
