Sometimes the most important development stories begin with a difficult question: who truly benefits from progress?
Nokutula Mhene reflects on the story of Kuda, an 18-year-old girl from a lithium mining community in Zimbabwe. Every day, trucks carrying valuable minerals leave her community, yet many young people like Kuda are still waiting to see those resources translated into opportunities, livelihoods, healthcare and hope.
As Africa’s critical minerals help power the global energy transition, communities at the heart of this transformation must not be left behind.
Through the LEAD Africa project and support to South Africa’s historic G20 Presidency — the first on African soil — UNDP is working to ensure that Africa’s natural wealth contributes to inclusive growth, stronger value chains, jobs and sustainable development for African people.
Because Africa’s minerals should not only power the world; they should help power Africa’s development too.
A future where young people like Kuda can share in the prosperity of the resources beneath their feet. A future where the SDGs become a reality for all.
