FIGHTING FMD, PROTECTING OUR LIVESTOCK AND FOOD SECURITY

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to intensify efforts to combat Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), with 1.7 million cattle already vaccinated out of an estimated 2.5 million across the province.

On the 18th of August 2026, during the Stakeholder Engagement on Animal Husbandry and Food Security at eMachibini Sportfield in Mtubatuba, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, declared FMD “enemy number one” for the province’s livestock sector.
The MEC emphasised that protecting livestock means protecting farmers’ livelihoods, food security and the future of rural communities.

As part of the engagement, the Agribusiness Development Agency (ADA) and Ntingwe Tea Estate showcased their products.

With vaccination continuing across the province, government, farmers, traditional leaders and communities are urged to work together to ensure that every animal is protected.

KWAZULU-NATAL COMMEMORATES 70 YEARS OF WOMEN’S COURAGE AND LEGACY

IXOPO | 9 AUGUST 2026.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government today commemorated National Women’s Day at the Jeffrey Zungu Sports Grounds in Ixopo, under the Johannes Phumani Phungula Local Municipality, a celebration marking 70 years since the historic 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings honouring the legacy of the women who shaped South Africa’s history.

Seventy years later, the spirit of those women continues to resonate across the nation. Their bravery and collective action remain a powerful reminder that meaningful change is possible when women stand together and challenge the barriers that seek to limit their potential.

Addressing the gathering, Premier Ntuli emphasised the fundamental role women play in strengthening society and building the nation “Women are special, they nurture our homes and communities. That is why when you uplift women, you build the nation.”

A deeply symbolic candle-lighting ceremony formed part of the programme, providing a moment of reflection and remembrance in honour of women, past and present whose sacrifices and contributions continue to illuminate the path for future generations.

The commemoration also provided a platform for economic empowerment and community participation through a vibrant exhibition, with Agribusiness Development Agency and Ntingwe Tea-Kzn among the participants showcasing their work.
