"Mashaba Blasts Zimbabwean Protest In Limpopo, Calls For State Of Emergency And Border Shutdown
Herman Mashaba has sparked heated debate after sharing a video showing a group of Zimbabwean nationals protesting in Jane Furse, Limpopo, while police officers monitored the gathering. The protesters were seen carrying placards with the words “Zimbabwe Zethu,” a slogan that Mashaba described as alarming and disrespectful to South Africa’s sovereignty.
The Herman Mashaba leader said the incident comes at a time when concerns around illegal immigration and border security are already growing across the country. According to him, the protest reflects a serious failure in immigration control and law enforcement.
Mashaba argued that allowing foreign nationals to march with what he called territorial messages sends the wrong signal to South Africans. He warned that the issue is no longer isolated but has become a national crisis that requires urgent intervention from government.
In response to the incident, Mashaba called on the Government of National Unity to declare a state of emergency focused on immigration enforcement. He also suggested that international travel should temporarily be restricted, except for essential purposes, to give authorities time to regain control of the borders and address undocumented migration.
His comments come amid increased pressure along the Limpopo border. Earlier this year, security forces reportedly intercepted more than 1,000 undocumented foreign nationals attempting to enter South Africa illegally, further intensifying public concern about jobs, housing, and strained public services.
The video quickly drew strong reactions online. Supporters backed Mashaba’s comments, saying the protest showed growing disrespect towards South Africans in their own country. Some social media users even called for tougher immigration laws, mass deportations, and increased military deployment at border posts.
However, critics warned that inflammatory rhetoric could worsen tensions and fuel violence. They argued that immigration challenges are closely linked to deeper social and economic struggles that cannot be solved through emergency measures alone.
The incident has once again highlighted the deep divisions in South Africa’s immigration debate, with some citizens demanding stronger border protection while others urge calm and balanced solutions to avoid further instability.
