To the moms who go, and those who wait.

You may have answered the call before the coffee even finished brewing.
You may have missed breakfast in bed because someone else needed help getting home.

To the mothers in search and rescue, and to those who quietly carry the worry while their loved ones serve, we thank you!

For every late-night callout, every “Drive safe”, every packed snack, every glance at the phone waiting for signal to return … thank you for loving people brave enough to answer the call.

Today, we hope you get to enjoy that cup of coffee while it’s still hot, a moment to put your feet up, and a little spoiling before duty calls again.

Happy Mother’s Day!

SARZA KZN APRIL TRAINING
Lookout Tower

Date: 25 April 2026

Last Saturday our team had their monthly training.

With our newest members joining the rest of the team for the first time, 15 vehicles split into 2 convoys and traveled to the training location, while working on convoy driving skills.

Once there, the team set up for some map work training - reading compasses, the difference between magnetic North and true North and how to triangulate a location should you have no signal or GPS.

The team worked together well and while the newer members learned some new skills, the more seasoned members could brush up on their knowledge.

SARZA INCIDENT REPORT
Kloof Gorge Rescue Operation

Date: 12 April 2026
Time of Call-Out: ±12:20pm

SARZA was activated following a request for assistance from Krantzkloof Ezemvelo staff regarding a hiker who had reportedly fallen ill within the Kloof Gorge area.

A coordinated response was established involving multiple agencies, including Metro Police Search and Rescue, EThekwini Fire Department, ALS Paramedics, KZN Mountain Rescue Club, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, EMRS, and SARZA.

SARZA along with members from the other teams deployed and made entry into the gorge on foot, to reach the patient. On arrival, the patient was found in the care of park rangers. Medical assessments indicated a suspected case of appendicitis.

The patient was secured in a Stokes basket, and a structured carry-out was conducted by all responding teams over approximately 2km to the designated extraction point.

Upon reaching the top, the patient was transferred to paramedics for continued care and stabilisation. Thereafter, the patient was transported to hospital for further treatment.

All Operations were completed with good inter-agency cooperation

SARZA Search and Rescue – Duzi Deployment (February)

In February, members of SARZA Search and Rescue worked alongside SAPS Search and Rescue providing safety and rescue support during the Duzi event.

Teams were deployed along the river and surrounding areas to assist with water safety, emergency response, and rescue operations where required. The Duzi is known for its challenging conditions, and the presence of rescue teams plays an important role in ensuring participant safety throughout the event.

We are proud to work together with all emergency services and volunteers who contribute their time and skills to keep participants safe during major events like these.

Thank you to all members who dedicated their time and effort during the Duzi deployment.

SARZA Search and Rescue was called to assist Meditech following a vehicle that left the roadway with three occupants inside. A rescue operation was conducted to safely extricate the patients from the vehicle.
We would like to thank all agencies involved for their teamwork and professionalism on scene.
Working alongside Ethekwini Fire, Metro Search and Rescue, and SAPS Search and Rescue, all patients were successfully extricated and handed over to medical teams from Meditech Emergency Response and ALS paramedics for further care.
Great teamwork and coordination between all services ensured a successful rescue operation.
