What happens when verified evidence becomes comics, zines, podcasts, video and interactive art?

From Evidence to Expression opens this Friday at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. The pop-up exhibition presents work created by 19 participants during Truth Lab’s five-day Building Narratives Studio.

Guided by House of INVADE and Burkinabè-French artist El Marto, participants have transformed lessons in fact-checking, media literacy and digital verification into accessible forms of storytelling.

Visitors will see the completed works alongside the processes behind them, from collecting evidence and identifying misinformation to constructing narratives grounded in fact.

🇫🇷 French cinema comes to screens across South Africa this September with Colours of Time (La Venue de l’avenir), presented as part of the 13th European Film Festival South Africa.

Directed by Cédric Klapisch, the film brings together four cousins who inherit an old house in Normandy and begin tracing the story of their family. Their search moves between present-day France and 19th-century Paris at the dawn of Impressionism, in a story about family, art, memory and the connections between past and present.

An Official Selection at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and winner of the Audience Award at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles, Colours of Time will screen in four cities:

📰 Next week, selected participants from across Southern Africa will come together in Johannesburg for the next phase of the Truth Lab programme: the Building Narratives Studio.

The five-day creative studio follows the online Make & Fake Lab, where 38 participants took part in training on media literacy, fact-checking and digital verification with experts and partners including Wikimedia South Africa, Moxii Africa, Africa Check, Dr Christopher Nehring (Germany), and the National Press Club.

In Johannesburg, 19 participants are putting that learning into practice, developing creative responses based on the evidence and ideas explored during the Make & Fake Lab. Guided by House of INVADE and Burkinabè-French artist El Marto, they are working across formats including comics, posters, zines, illustration, audio, podcasts, video and interactive visual storytelling.

The week will culminate in From Evidence to Expression, a pop-up exhibition open to the public, presenting both the final works and the investigative and creative processes behind them.

On Saturday, 5 September 2026, Acts of Care opened at Latitudes Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg, bringing the archives of the Township AIDS Project (TAP) into a public space of memory, reflection and participation.

Visitors moved through three interconnected stations: Witness examines past practices of care through virtual reality; Recognise considers the present through augmented reality; and Act invites visitors to share messages for the future through poster-making.

Together, these experiences trace TAP’s history of community education and HIV and AIDS activism, while asking what its work in the 1990s can teach us today.

The exhibition is open to the public until 1 December 2026.
